The Pirates had four weight class champions — Jamilynne Gonzalez at 121 pounds, Ariana Forbes at 131, Danha Cruz at 143 and Esther Villa at 170 pounds.
Kimberly Alves, who coaches the team with Isaac Galaviz, believes this is the first time the RHS girls wrestling program has brought home a first place trophy.
In addition to the four champions, the Pirates re- ceived second place finishes from Jocelyn Barrera (126 pounds), Odalis Banda (150) and Karmai Perez (160). Third place finishers were Marian DelBosque (entered with Barrera in the 126 class) while Lucero Cedeno

The Reedley High Pirates wrestling team used its own tournament – the ever-grow- ing California Classic — to gain experience and pre- pare team members for the upcoming North Yosemite League dual meet season.
This fifth annual tourna- ment, which has expanded from 16 to 25 schools, packed out the Reedley High main gym on Dec. 15 with many Central Section schools and out-of-area powers from the Central Coast.
Arroyo Grande won the team title with 229 points, edging out Morro Bay with 223 points. Highland of Ba- kersfield had the top section finish, third place with 185 points.
The host Pirates finished in 12th place with 89.5 points. The bulk of their scoring came from two talented freshmen — Gabriel Rivera at 108 pounds and Phillip Ar- royo in the 120 class.
Rivera (13-3 on the sea- son) went 3-1, getting two decision wins and one pin to reach the finals. There, he lost by a 9-0 decision to

Immanuel High School this week announced Andrew Halstead as its new head varsity football coach.
Halstead — who coached the of- fensive line for the past two seasons at Reedley College — has been with Immanuel Schools for three years as a junior high and high school history teacher. He replaces Kevin Riddle, who compiled an 8-12 record in two seasons as Eagles head coach.
Halstead stated in a Dec. 18 news release that he’s ex-
cited to begin his
new journey.
“I have loved
being a part of Im-
manuel Schools over
the past three years
and look forward
to becoming more
involved in the Im-
manuel community,”
he said. “I commend
the hard work the
coaching staff has put in for the last two years, and plan to continue to build on the culture they have established. I hope to retain those coaches moving forward, so they can continue to be a huge part of the Immanuel football community.”
Growing up in Kerman, Halstead’s 12-year coaching career has taken him all across the Central Valley. He has had assistant coaching tenures at Kerman High School (2008-09, 2013 Offensive and Defensive Line Coach), Immanuel High School (2012, 2016 as defensive coordinator), Madera South High School (2014-2015 as freshman and JV head coach) and Mendota High School (2007 as offensive line coach).
Halstead also spent two years (2010-11) as the defensive line coach at Clovis West High School, where he was a part of the 2010 Central Section Division I Championship team.
During Halstead's two years at Reedley College, the Tiger’s offense ranked ninth (2017) and fifth (2018) in the state. They averaged almost 200 rushing yards a game and amassed over 2,000 yards on the ground in both 2017 and 2018. This year’s effort helped the team to a 10-1 record and a Golden Coast Conference Champion- ship (Reedley’s first conference title since 2009) and an appearance in the Northern Division Championship Bowl Game.

Corcoran's Jonah Hernandez, who was named Outstanding Lower Weights Wrestler in the tournament.
Arroyo (14-4) won three of his five matches, working up through consolation to take fourth place. Both Rive- ra and Arroyo have starred in junior wrestling and come in with extensive mat experi- ence for freshmen.
"Right now, we're mainly new guys," coach Isidro Ar- royo said of his team. It's his second year coaching the varsity, and his sixth year coaching with the program since graduating high school.
Fresno High's Kevin Rezac was voted Outstand- ing Upper Weights Wrestler by posting three pins.
Coach Arroyo said he was pleased with how the tourna- ment continues to improve. "This is the most teams we've had involved, and we're con- tinuing to grow," he said.
Reedley next competes at the Zinkin Classic Friday and Saturday, Dec. 21-22, at Bu- chanan High School in Clovis. The Pirates will also partici- pate in tournaments in Lem- oore on Dec. 27 and Dinuba on Jan. 4-5.

Eagle boys go 2-2 at Modesto tournament
Staff Report
The Reedley High boys basketball team finished the annual Andrew Bedoya Holiday Classic with a 1-3 record, dropping three hard-fought
games after an
opening win in the
Dinuba-hosted tour-
nament ran their
victory streak to three games.
The Pirates (6-4) defeated Kennedy High of Delano 62-55 on Dec. 12 at the RHS gym, and led in all portions of the three subsequent games. But the end result were losses to Central Valley Christian (61-55) at RHS on Dec. 13, Mt. Whitney (61-54) at Dinuba High on Dec. 14 and Tulare Union (49-41) at DHS on Dec. 15. In each game, the opposition held on or pulled away from a tight battle down the stretch.
Junior guard Augie Villareal scored 25 points in the loss to Central Valley Chris- tian, but the taller Cavaliers overcame poor free throw shooting in the final quarter to hang on for the victory. Against Mt. Whit- ney, the Pirates came within a point but were never able to catch the Pioneers af- ter they posted a 21-8 second quarter run.
Villareal led Reedley with 16 points while sophomore Marcus Heinrichs add- ed 10 points. In the Dec. 15 loss to Tulare
