Future Health Care includes Robots?
e need to age
in place becomes more prevalent as the senior population grows,. Family, friends or relatives will not be able to do all the work. e demand for caregiv- ers is growing faster than the supply of the caregiver work force.
Companies are now working on robots to help provide care. Arti cial Intelligence is progressing at lighting speed. Robots, with arti cial intelligence in them that can learn
new things, will be able to help the elderly population keep their independence and reduce their social isolation.
Nursing facilities will soon have beds that will weigh the person, take their vital signs, tell you how well the person slept and will be aware when

If all this seems farfetched, look at all the technology we use today. Our cars have computers on board, smart phones and smart watches are just some of the ways we are using technology. Many
of us already have an Alexa or Google Spot in our homes to assist in all sorts of functions. Researchers are using that technology and applying it to helping seniors. ere is a robot similar to Alexa that has
a screen to view pictures
or to do video conferences with family and friends. e senior only has to speak to the robot and
they can call someone, read an email or have it read to them. ese devices can be set up to remind the senior to take their medications and even encourage the person to do some exercise.
As arti cial intel-
ligence evolves, we will soon see a driverless car. Wouldn’t it be great not to have to worry about our loved one’s driving ability? ey would have the free- dom to move about town as they please and retain the feeling of indepen- dence driving a car brings. We will see delivery robots bringing groceries, medi- cations, and more to the senior’s door step. Tele- medicine will be available and widespread. e doc- tor will be able to interact with a patient in a nursing home without have to set foot in the facility. Nurses will be able to talk face to face with the doctor about concerns. Wound issues will be dealt with quicker because the nurse will not have to wait for the doctor to come in.
All in all robots and arti cial intelligence is
wonderful and exciting but nothing can replace the human touch and friend- ship. We will have many technology aids in the fu- ture to help us do our job but the need for human caregivers, be it family or in a community like Sierra View Homes Retirement Community is vital to one’s well-being. We still need friends and family who love and care about spending time with us.
We are living in an exciting time full of
whatifsandIbetIcan make that happen. As we become more and more submerged into the world of arti cial intelligence we will hopefully be able to age in place longer with better quality of life always keeping the touch of a real person in the picture.
someone is rising from the bed. All this data will ow to the charge nurses so they can determine if there is a change of condition
or someone is about to fall getting out of bed.
Many software companies have programs that can be interactive so a person with dementia can play games and not feel belittled by what they can- not remember. I played a Pop the Bubble game at a recent conference. You see the bubble on the screen; you touch the screen where the bubble is and watch it
Now What?
burst creating an interest- ing pattern.
Robot pets are being created to interact with
a person. Studies of hav- ing a pet interact with you brings stress levels down, relieves anxiety and creates a more peaceful environ- ment. Nothing takes the place of a real pet in my opinion; robots are the next best thing if you can- not have a real pet. ese pet robots react to touch, voice and mood. Tests show they help to relieve anxiety.
