Friday night’s Central Section Division II semifinals playoff game, pitting Dinuba against defending champion Tulare, went down to the final possession.
The Redskins defense knocked down a pass from Emperors quarterback Josh Magaña on a 4th down play deep in Tribe territory to secure a 44-37 win at Bob Mathias Stadium.
Dinuba ends the season with a 9-3 record while Tulare remained unbeaten heading into this week’s championship game against Righetti High of Santa Maria, who defeated Stockdale of Bakersfield, 21-0.
“We gave everything we had, we left nothing on the field,” said coach Kevin Scharton. “We opened the playbook and played to win, but just fell short.”
In a highly-anticipated rematch from last year’s Valley title game, the Emperors led 15-14 at half and started out quickly in the third quarter as they marched 76 yards on 11 plays, scoring on a 22-yard wide receiver screen by

Jacob Huerta from Magaña.
The defense, which harassed Tribe
quarterback Nathan Lamb all game long, came up big when Joshua Sanchez blocked Lamb’s punt, recovering it at the 18-yard line. The Emperors quickly turned it into a score when Magaña connected on a TD pass to tight end Jonathan Calderon, increasing the lead to 30-14.
With their backs against the wall, Tulare pieced together a drive covering 72 yards on 10 plays as Lamb threw a short pass to running back Randy Jordan Jr., a Fresno State verbal commit, who scrambled his way to the end zone, cutting Dinuba’s lead. Lamb and Jordan Jr. connected again on a successful two-point conversion to make the score 30-22.
On the ensuing possession, the Emperors moved the ball toward midfield when Tulare’s defense came up with a big momentum shifting play as Magaña was sacked and lost the ball. The Tribe’s Josh Hernandez scooped up a fumble returning it 54-yards for a TD. Lamb then completed a pass to running back Willie James to tie the game at 30-all.
The Tribe converted a 4th-and-1 on a short sneak by Lamb deep inside DHS territory and a play later David Dailey scored a TD on a short run to push their

A promising season came to a tough ending for the Dinuba High girls cross country team.
The Emperors were eyeing a bid to the state championships, but at the end of the Central Section Division III finals it was Wasco and Morro Bay who clinched the top two spots to this weekend’s state finals at Woodward Park.
Coach Lucas Lichtenwaldt had hoped for an off day by the Tigers and a solid run by Dinuba. As it turned out, Wasco put the hammer down early having all of their top five runners in the top half of the 152 field just past the mile marker. The Tigers, who were the top team in Div. 3, won the crown with 67 points followed by Morro Bay with 87. Dinuba wound up fifth with 222 points trailing Reedley (202) and surprising Kerman (148).
The Emperors were led by juniors Jackie Delgado and Luz Diaz who were 12th and 15th place overall with times of 20 minutes, 42.79 seconds and 20:55.65, respectively.
Both their times were personal bests from their performances a week before at the Central Sequoia League championships.
Jasmine Jorge was 61st in 22:28.87 and Luzmi Ramirez was 69th in 22:36.88. Wrapping up the team’s efforts were Elizabeth Mendez (96th, 23:21.01), Ali Ontiveros (100th, 23:38.83) and Amanda Soto (117th, 24:21.25).

For the boys, Sinoel Garcia had a top 30 finish, but the senior fell short in his bid to record a personal best on the 5,000 meter course.
“I didn’t get my fastest time,” Garcia said.
Garcia had a time of 19 minutes, 05.75 seconds for 30th to lead Orosi. Injuries took its toll on the Cardinals boys team that prevented them from competing in the Division 5 team standings, according to Garcia.
Nicholas Chavez was 57th in 20:06.47 and Gilberto Giron finished 64th in 20:16.47, while Marco Garcia was 109th in 22:26.41.
Chowchilla won the team race with 39 points just ahead of California City, who was second with 43 points were followed by Central Valley Christian with 157, Mendota with 174 and Washington Union with 177.
