Most, including chairperson Johnny Perez, are relatively new in their roles as planning com- missioners.
All seemed to welcome the training they received on Sept. 27 on roles of planning commis- sioners, land use 101 and the
Brown Act.
"You have important jobs,"
said city attorney Hilda Cantu Montoy, who with assistant city attorney Shannon Chaffin, con- ducted the training session.
"It's important that you know how to do those jobs," said Mon- toy.
"You serve as a standing
advisory body to assist the city council on planning and develop- ment matters," said Montoy.
She reminded the commis- sioners that all their decisions need to be consistent with the city's general plan, zoning ordi- nances and other city policies.
Montoy pointed out that while the commission can in many
cases make decisions on zoning matters, the city council retains the final authority.
The council will, in fact, be hearing an appeal of one of the commission's decisions on Oct. 8 at 6 p.m.
