SANGER HERALD 6A THURSDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2018 A break from tradition
For years Sanger Rotary's annual BBQ fundraiser has been held on
a weekday at the community center and featured $12 takeout meals -
not this year!

For more than 50 years Sanger Rotary's major fundraiser has been a barbecue dinner.
It used to be a sit down affair as part of one of Sanger's annual festivals. When the festival was finally cancelled the barbecue location moved to St. Mary's social hall and then to the community center.
It was nearly always scheduled on a weekday and, in recent years, it nearly always featured barbecued tri-tip and chicken takeout meals for a very reasonable - considering the event was intended to raise money for Rotary's many com- munityserviceactivities -$12aplate.
The problem - in recent years - was that the cost of putting it on in the traditional way at the traditional place didn't leave much money to fund all the club's charitable activities and more fundraisers had to be created, lots of them.
This year Sanger Rotary, with the urging of new club president Greg Tarascou, decided to break from tradition - and it seemed to pay off in a big way.
It was still a tri-tip and chicken dinner, but it was moved from the usual community center and the usual weekday to the Kings River Winery on a Sunday evening.
In addition to the meal, it featured a band, a live and silent auction, a dessert auction and a raffle.
The price was bumped up to $25 and a children's meal was offered for $10.
How did the new day, location, event and price work out? "Great," said Tarascou. "Just great."
Even on one of the busiest weekends of the year people
seemed to come early and stay late.
It looked like most of the tables were filled and most of the
donated auction items were sold at good prices.

providing scholarships for graduating Sanger High se- niors and for eighth graders at WAMS.
"Additionally this fund- raiser will continue to help Rotary’s worldwide mission to eradicate polio forever," said Tarascou.
If the retooled event catches on as well as the club hopes, it would mean fewer fundraisers and even more focus on community service activities, said Tarascou.

The Sanger Animal Shelter's pets of the week are Duchess, Luna and Knight.
Duchess and Luna are beautiful young, playful German shepherd ladies who like to run, romp and cuddle.
Knight is probably a shepherd/malamute mix, not quite a year old, who has lots of energy, likes to walk, go for car rides and hop on chairs when he gets his picture taken at the shelter.
You'll be able to meet them from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 13 at the Clovis Tractor Supply Store on Herndon.
Call animal control officer Mario Irazoqui at (559) 618-9071 or message the Sanger Animal Shel- ter Facebook page and leave your email address to find out more about the adoption process which will involve home checks.
The cost for each adoption will vary.
Let Mario know if you're interested in provid- ing a temporary foster home for any of the shelter dogs.
