There’s not one cookie I’ve eaten (that I wouldn’t like to eat again). It’s like, ‘Can I have that recipe?’”
Anjelica Hernandez, who readers may hear more from later, said, “They’re all really good. It’s kind of hard to judge them.”
At this point, Sheppard may have said, “Yeah,” in that drawn-out Okie way of his, making it sound like
two syllables.
Karen Pearson, also from
the chamber, however, had a revelation. Holding onto a remaining morsel of No. 11, she said, “I found the winner. I’m done after this. The sky’s going to open up. This is like everything but the kitchen sink. Kind of everything good.”

the judges ranked their entries and found the best excellent. And this year’s winner was Gi-Gi’s Chocolate Chip Cookies by Sanger Rotary president Gina Cuevas. She beat out 16 other entries for the honor.
“I’m ecstatic,” Cuevas said the next day. “But I’m too tired to be happy.”
Cuevas and other members of Sanger Rotary and the Sanger High Interact Club had just completed serving lunch to more than 300 at the club’s 39th annual Jim McCaig Memorial Senior Citizen Christmas Luncheon. Cuevas had been working the event since early that morning. Cleanup was finished by mid afternoon.
Cuevas said the story behind the recipe involves a big assist from her sister in law and Cuevas’ desire to learn to bake. She said years ago she used her cookies to get a scholarship to culinary school. And it was there she truly learned to create treats that captivated more than a dozen Herald judges.
Fire chief Greg Tarascou took one bite of her cookies and knew whose they were. They were that good.
“My dream is to own my own bakery someday,” Cuevas said. And she passed along this advice: “Your hands are you best tools.”
Second place was Bonnie Murillo’s Rocky Road Fudge Bar Cookies,
and third was Celestine Rodriguez’s Peanut Butter Cup Cookies.
Here’s Cuevas’ recipe:
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup (2 sticks) butter 3/4 cup granulated sugar 3/4 cup packed brown
sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 large eggs
2 cups (12-ounce
package) Nestle Toll House Semi-Sweet Chocolate Morsels
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Combine flour, baking soda and salt in a small bowl. Beat butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar and vanilla extract
in a large mixing bowl until creamy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Gradually beat in flour mixture. Stir in morsels and nuts. drop by rounded tablespoon onto ungreased baking sheets.
Bake for 9 to 11 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely.

and Aurelia Ramirez got together and brainstormed. And they likely brought in others. In any event, the dinner was created as a seasonal way to help generate support for the church food bank. Cox said her trio of friends call themselves the Good Graces. “Or the Golden Girls,” Avery added.
“I’m just so proud of everybody who makes this a success,” Cox said.
Victoria Griffin, Cox’s granddaughter who sat at a table with other relatives, had good things to say about her grandma. “She’s amazing,” Griffin said. “She’s a productive member of the community. She’s also a good cook.”
Many creations were the work of Ramirez, who Cox called an artist. She was also modest and worried that some may not like what she had made. “Not bad,” she said.
Margaret Puente, who described herself as part of the crew, made a more effervescent observation. “I think it’s beautiful,” she said. “We want to make more money than last year. This is all homemade. Everything you see here.”
