Fresno County’s largest privately funded, $42 million senior lifestyle community, The Vineyards, will celebrate its completion on Jan. 27 with a symbolic flag raising – the first of several events to be held through Febru- ary.
A reception will begins at 10 a.m. and the flag raising program will begin at 10:30 a.m. at 6720 E. Kings Canyon Road, off highway 180 a few miles west of Sanger, just west of Temperance Avenue.
"To recognize the longstanding work of the California Armenian Home and in honor of their love and respect for the senior genera- tion, Mimi Koligian and her extended family donated flag poles to display the United States, California and Armenian flags at the entry to The Vineyards. The flags will be raised and anthems performed in a dedica- tion representing the freedom, respect and unity of our region, and the culturally diverse residents welcomed at The Vineyards," said
Debbie Nalchajian-Cohen in a press release from Cohen Communications.
The California Armenian Home is a not- for-profit corporation established in 1952
by the local Armenian community, which donated 40-acres of land a few miles west of Sanger. The building, and the funds to furnish a continuing care retirement community.
Today, 65 years later, the California Arme- nian Home provides both short and long-term 24-hour skilled nursing and rehabilitation residency, and takes most insurance pro- grams, said Nalchajian-Cohen.
To prepare for the growing senior popula- tion, the California Armenian Home Board of Directors unanimously approved the $42 million expansion project, The Vineyards, in 2014.
The continuing care expansion project opened for residency on Jan. 2.

Lola, a chi- huahua, who was featured last week has been adopted. So has Red Fox. His new family calls him "Rusty."
Still at the shelter waiting for you to come by and meet them are:
• Buster Brown,
a 1-2 year old hap-
py, energetic pitbull mixwholikescook- BusterBrown ies, playing, walking
and hugging;
• Misty, a playful, high energy young lady lab mix about 2 years old who loves to walk and go for car rides;
• Blaze, a young pitbull mix who loves to play and gets along well with everyone; and
• Doc, a sweet, friendly, gentle and mature pitbull mix who has been in the shelter for awhile and would really like to be your new best friend. He's maybe 6-7 years old, weighs about 50 pounds and loves to walk.
Call Sanger animal control officer Mario Irazoqui at (559) 618-9071 to make an appoint- ment to meet Angel, Buster, Misty, Doc or any of the other dogs hoping for a forever home.
To get to the shelter take North Avenue east, toward the mountains, cross Newmark Avenue and follow the signs.
Adoption requires spaying/neutering and bringing the rabies shot up to date.
The only charge is to the veterinarian, Gregory Saiki DVM.
Weather for Apache Country
Today 640/410
The rain, predicted for weeks, finally came.
Relatively light amounts will continue to fall off and on for the next couple of weeks in Sanger.
It hasn't been so light, how- ever, in southern California.
In fact it has been the heaviest rain the L.A. Basin has seen since last February. It triggered mudslides, rock- slides and debris flows over areas recently charred by those destructive wildfires.
Nothing like that is ex- pected in our area where the
forecast is for gentle rain and showers.
After a break on Sunday and Monday it will probably rain enough over the next five days to make our park pond- ing basins attractive to the ducks flying by this time of the year.
Good news for farmers and those who don't like the sound of the nearby wind machines, the nighttime temperatures will be well above freezing.
Daytime temperatures will stay in the mid 60s for at least the next couple of weeks. It

won't be great weather for soccer, but it's perfect for watching Apache basketball in the Coach Dean Nicholson gym at Sanger High School.
Angel is more interested the the hugs and lov- ing words she's hearing from animal shelter volunteer Kim Reed than in the dog biscuit Kim is holding.

Angel is a sweetheart pitbull mix who took awhile to adjust to living at the shelter.
She had been abandoned and was lonely and scared. She didn't know how to respond to hugs, treats, a new bed and a sweater and blanket to keep her warm at night.
She was always gentle and well mannered, but shy. But she soon warmed up to shelter volunteer Kim Reed and now they are best buddies.
Angel is probably about 2 years old. She loves snuggling and being hugged. She's al-
