MVT Staff Report
It’s been almost 40 years since the Sanger Apaches’ varsity boys soccer team won a league title. That drought ended last week after the team defeated Madera High, 2-0, on Feb. 6 to secure the CMAC title with a 5-2- 3 league record. The team also finished the regu- lar season with an 18-3-5 overall record.
The last time the Sanger Apaches’ varsity boys’ soccer team won a league title was in 1981.
The Apaches held off second place Madera South (4-3-3) after the two teams ended their Feb. 4 match in a scoreless tie. It was the second time the two teams ended in a draw, as their first match on Jan. 17 ended in a 1-1 tie after two extra periods of overtime. With Edison beating Madera South 2-0 on Feb. 6, the Apach- es earned the outright league title.
In addition to win- ning the CMAC title, the Apaches also earned the No. 1 seed in the CIF Cen- tral Section’s Division 2 playoffs, a bye in the first round and home field ad- vantage throughout.
Dinuba received the No. 2 seed and one of two other first round byes. Pi- oneer Valley received the last bye of the first round at No. 3.

Dinuba High girls basketball coach Benny Prado would be the first to admit this season has been rough at times.
“It’s been a rough season, a lot of off the court things but this team battled all season,” Prado said.
The Lady Emperors overcame a slow start against Central Valley Christian be- fore outscoring the Lady Cavaliers, 37- 24, in the second half in a 50-39 win on Feb. 6.
With the playoffs right around the corner, the win was the third in a row for Dinuba as the team improved to 16- 11 overall and 8-3 in Central Sequoia League play, and for Prado it means much more.
“I’m proud of the perseverance this team has shown throughout the season. The ups and downs have only pulled this team closer together and we are finally
playing our best team basketball of the season at the right time.”
Kailey Lopez and Yasmine Villareal- Harris each scored 11 points to lead Dinuba, who trailed 15-13 at half. The offense got rolling in the third quarter as the Lady Emperors scored 23 points to lead 36-26.
Azlynn Villalobos added nine points and Alyssa Hernandez chipped in six.
