Reedley High’s North Yosemite League cham- pion boys soccer began its postseason journey this week in the toughest way possible – competing in the Central Section Di- vision 1 large school play- offs.
The Pirates (19-1-5, 9-1-0) on Feb. 8 drew the No. 5 seed of 16 schools competing in D-1, and opened the playoffs with a Feb. 11 home match against No. 12 Buchanan High of Clovis. Results were unavailable at press time, but a win would ad- vance Reedley to a Thurs- day, Feb. 13, matchup against the winner of No. 4 Central and No. 13 Liberty-Bakersfield. If the Grizzlies win as the higher seed, they would host Reedley in Fresno in a likely 6 p.m. start.
The Pirates are led by senior striker Phillip Rico, who holds the new school single season goals record with 40 to wipe out the old mark of 34 by current professional player An- thony Velarde, brother of RHS coach Eric Velarde.
Rico closed out the regular season in style, collecting five goals in a 7-3 rout of Sunnyside High on Feb. 5 at Sal Gon- zalez Field. Junior Isaac Cardenas had the other
two Pirates goals, and se- nior Tomas Alvarez assist- ed on three of the scores.
San Luis Obispo High is the top seed in Division 1, and would be Reedley’s likely semifinal opponent on Wednesday, Feb. 19, if the Pirates were to ad- vance that far. Depending on matchups, the finals would be played Friday or Saturday, Feb. 21-22.

Reedley High’s girls, ravaged by injuries for much of the season, en- tered the playoffs on their best stretch of matches this season. The Pirates (6-16-5, 4-3-3 NYL) closed out league play with a 1-0 Senior Night shutout of Hoover on Feb. 4 and a 2-0 blanking of Sunnyside High in Fresno on Feb. 6.
Reedley is 2-1-2 in its last five matches, includ- ing ties against co-cham- pions Fresno (0-0 on Jan. 31) and Roosevelt (1-1 on Jan. 24).
The Pirates drew the No. 9 seed in the section Division 3 brackets, which earned them an opening match against No. 8 Sel- ma High on Feb. 12 at Im- manuel Sports Complex. If the Pirates pulled out the victory, they would play in the quarterfinals at top-seed Kingsburg High in a 6 p.m. start on Friday, Feb. 14.
3-point basket by Josiah James (23 points). Im- manuel then played for the final shot, and after a Shawn Rodgers miss, Williams (15 points, 13 rebounds) grabbed the offensive board and scored on a layup. A last- ditch HW shot failed, and the Eagles escaped with the victory.
Rodgers paced Im- manuel with 18 points, eight rebounds and two assists while guard Josh
Tolpezninkas added nine points on a trio of 3-point baskets in the third quar- ter. Darius Gatson led Hanford West with 24 points.
Williams scored 28 points and collected 12 rebounds against Sel- ma, but the Eagles were unable to overcome a 37-point scoring outburst by Aaron Blancas. Rod- gers finished the night with 14 points and six rebounds while Tolpe-
