November 27, 1937 ~ June 15, 2018
Jack McElroy, of Fresno, passed away on June 15, 2018.
Jack was born on November 27, 1937, to John Stuart and Helen McElroy on Belvedere in Marin County. He was a proud veteran of the US Navy and member of the Clovis Elks.
In addition, Jack loved the many adventures he and his family would take each summer in the motor home. Although he may be gone these are memories that his family will treasure forever.
Jack is survived by his wife of 39 years, Joy; two daughters, Micki and Craig Sorensen; Penny and Steve Wharton; and son, Doug and Nicole Grote. He also leaves behind ve granddaughters, one grandson.
Graveside services will be held to celebrate Jack’s life on June 25, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at the Reedley Cemetery. Remembrances can be made to the Amputee Coalition, 900 East Hill Avenue, Suite 390, Knoxville, TN 37915.
Carmen Madrid Macias
Carmen Madrid Macias, 91, of Sanger passed away peacefully on May 30, 2018 with her fam-
ily by her side.
She was born Sept. 3, 1926, in New Mexico, though most of her life was spent in California. She at- tended Sanger Union Vaca- tion Church School, and she married David Macias Jr. on Nov. 26, 1950, in a ceremony in Sanger.
Among many admired qualities,
she was known for her grand sense of style and playful wit. She was a tireless and loving supporter of her six children’s academic, athletic and work ambitions. You wouldn’t find a more enthusiastic fan of Elvis Presley, a perfect pursuit considering her love of song and dance.
A spirited holiday host and talented chef, she loved to be called “Charmin’ Carmen.” She was a devout Catholic who prayed for her family daily.
She is survived by husband David, sons David Macias III, George M. Macias and Mark Macias as well as daughters Marlene J. Mabray, Shirley Macias and Diana L. Copeland.
She has a surviving sister, Diane Krider, 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by daughter Loretta Marie Macias, grandson Darrell Copeland III and great grandson Ryder Brock Macias.
The family would like to thank Golden Living Center staff, especially nurse Martha for her com- passion and care. Thank you to hospice nurse Manpreet, her longtime caregiver Lupita Camare- na, Wallin Funeral Home and General Manager Erlinda Valdez. Thank you to family and friends for your thoughts, prayers, support, plants and flowers.
sues involving detention facilities.
One committee of the 2017-2018 grand jury was dedicated to investigating issues with Sanger's Measure S public safety tax fund.
The grand jury receives complaints and comments from the public, often through an online form
that citizens can fill out and submit, and investigates accordingly. Investigations can also be initiated from an individual grand juror.
To conduct an investiga- tion a subcommittee inter- views involved parties and gathers information.
“They (grand jurors)
are not told how to do it or guided in things that they should or shouldn’t look at,” Oliver said.
The grand jury is not ac- countable to elected officials or government employees and its recommendations and findings should be unbiased and impartial, Oliver said.
After a subcommittee conducts an investigation and writes a report with its find- ings and recommendations, the report must be adopted by the entire grand jury before it is released.
Once the grand jury re- leases a report, the agency or parties involved have 60 days
to respond if a governmental agency or 90 days if a non- governmental group.
“The real power of the grand jury comes when they can release a report to the public,” jury and public services manager Spears said. “But sometimes just by investigating the changes may come about.”
Candidates for the grand jury can be nominated by a current grand jury member, by a judge or they can nomi- nate themselves.
The Fresno Superior Court has already empaneled the 19 persons who will make
up the Fresno County Grand Jury from July 2018 through June 2019.
Grand jury applications are available at www.fresno. courts.ca.gov or by calling the Fresno Superior Court juror services manager at (559) 457-1605.
In order to be eligible for the grand jury applicants must: be a citizen of the United States; be 18 years of age or older; be a resident of Fresno County for at least one year prior to selection; be in possession of natural faculties, ordinary intelli- gence, sound judgment, fair character; have sufficient
