News The Dinuba Sentinel
Tomlinson then stated that the school District states its cultivating excellence, but hasn’t shown that in the visual arts. He stated that the arts should be better, or at least similar, to surrounding schools.
“It would be nice to see something change soon,” Tomlinson concluded.
• Dinuba High School had a talent show last month. The event had 15 acts. A video of the top three acts were showcased at the school board meeting. Joshua Garcia placed third with his one-man-band performance. Joshua played several instruments, including piano, clarinet and guitar. He used a looping app so he recorded one track and then added other instruments on top of it. Joshua won $75. Daniel Gutierrez placed second as he sang a song in Spanish while playing the guitar. Daniel earned $150. Magician Ulises Cantu placed first in the talent show and received $250 for his magic show that had the audience stunned.
• The school board meeting also had four resolutions approved. The first resolution was a Tobacco Awareness Month Proclamation. Barbara Thiesen stated that tobacco awareness is an ongoing thing, not just for the month of February. She also stated studies are coming out that vaping is as harmful or more than cigarettes, but that the industry is glorifying it and aiming it at children with a variety of flavors, like grape and root beer.
• Another resolution was a Superintendents Interleague Council, which focuses on CIF sports schedules with the goal to protect student instructional time.
“We want to monitor start times of games so they don’t interfere with testing,” Dinuba Unified School District Superintendent Joe Hernandez
said.
Board member Sandra
Kizirian was all for supporting the resolution. She said that she wasn’t happy with coaches saying they will end practice at 6 p.m. and then take another 30 minutes at the end of practice to lecture to the players. She also added that at the end of games coaches will also make parents, and grandparents like herself, wait 30 minutes as they talk to theplayers.
“I know I make the coaches mad when I say that,” Kizirian said.
• Another resolution approved was the Full and Fair Funding of California Public Schools. The resolution urges the state legislature to fund California’s public schools at the national average or higher by the year 2020, and at a level equal to or above the average of the top 10 states by 2025. As of now the state pays $1,961 less per student than the national average.
“I think we should support this resolution,” school board president Beverly Keel-Worrell said.
“Education needs to be a priority in the state,” board member Ron Froese said.
Froese talked about a state in Southern India that decided to prioritize education and now they are one of the wealthiest states in that country, as their economy is flourishing.
The last resolution was Support of Accelerating Distribution of Prop 51 School Facilities Funds. This resolution supports accelerating the distribution of Proposition 51 school facilities funds. Voters approved of a $9 billion school bond for the state, but only $300 million has been used and only $634 million is projected to be used this year. The District stated that the governor is trying to make the bond a 10-year bond.
