This past week the Kings River Conservancy was awarded grants from two foundations totaling $110,000 to further enhance the North Riverside Trail and to begin work on a Nature Education Center and Wildlife Management Area.
The first grant is for $100,000 and was awarded by the Central Valley Community Foundation from the Ted Martin Fund to develop 34 acres along the Kings River into a Wildlife Management Area and Nature Education Center. The area and center will be utilized as part of a science education program for local students and by the general public.
“We are thrilled with the opportunity to expand the public access and educational opportunities within this 34-acre Wildlife area,” said Vernon Crowder, Executive Director, Kings River Conservancy.

He was arrested in the 200 block of South Crawford Avenue and transferred to county jail.

the US Army Corps of Engineers will work together to develop this land, currently owned by the US Army Corps of Engineers. This 34-acre stretch of land is located along the south side of the Kings River just below the Pine Flat Dam and is a former campground. A network of “all-accessible” trails will be established.
Construction is anticipated to take 12 months to complete and will be overseen by the US Army Corps of Engineers.
"We're excited to be able to partner with the Kings River Conservancy to implement improvements that will help us provide new educational opportunities for local school groups and park visitors at our Kings River Wildlife Area," said Jeromy Caldwell, Park Manager, Pine Flat Lake and Dam.
The Kings River Conservancy currently maintains the 1.5 mile North Riverside Trail that runs
the 34-acre Wildlife Management Area. Sanger Unified School District brings seventh grade students to the North Riverside Trail on field trips to utilize as an outdoor nature classroom.
The second grant for $10,000 was awarded from the Central Valley Foundation to provide 32 interpretive trail signs along the North Riverside Trail.
The signs will be utilized in assisting teachers with the courses and will be translated into Spanish and Hmong. In addition, the general public can access the trail and use these signs to gain a greater understanding of the local environment.
The grant will also provide brochures that students will take home for further study and to inform their families about the Kings River in hopes the families will visit the North Riverside Trail together.
The Conservancy will be
reaching out to other school districts and youth organizations to make them aware of this outdoor educational and recreational area.
The Kings River Conservancy is a non-profit organization dedicated to encouraging public safety and sound public conservation practices along the Kings River corridor from Pine Flat Dam to Highway 99. The organization’s purpose is to protect, enhance and provide education about the Kings River. The Conservancy participates in functions such as invasive species removal, operates a trout incubator house to release trout into the river, supports additional warden patrols, and maintains safe public trails and access points along the river.
