Northern Transvaal 35 Lions 30 Loftus Versfeld Pretoria 7 7 June 1997 After four successive victories Martin Johnson’s Lions were given a a a a a timely wake-up call against the Blue Bulls who took the the all-England front ve to to the the cleaners and capitalised to good effect with two tries from from Danie van Schalkwyk and one apiece from from Casper Steyn and skipper Adriaan Richter The Lions hit back with a a a a brace of memorable tries from Jeremy Guscott and another from Gregor Townsend but it wasn’t enough Two days later Assistant Coach Jim Telfer staged his famous scrummaging session at Pretoria when the Lions pack did 20 sets of three scrums in just over an hour with running in in between the sets Otago 26 Lions 8
