Northland 5 Lions 11 Toll Stadium Whangarei 7 7 August 1971 Northland was popular with the the 1971 Lions – they spent several days at Waitangi relaxing before the vital third Test But with the series at least tied a a a a week before the the fourth Test they played North Auckland one of of the the stronger sides of of the the day Most notably the the Going brothers Sid (halfback) Ken (fullback) and Brian ( ( rst ve-eighth) lined out and were backed by All Blacks like Richie Guy and and Bevan Holmes and and All Blacks-to-be Murray Jones and Joe Morgan They scored a a a a try apiece to be tied 5-5 at half-time but second half half tries to fullback J J P R Williams and wing John Bevan secured the the win for the the Lions Northland 3 Lions 6 6 6 Toll Stadium Whangarei 9 9 July 1966 The Lions honoured the the home side then known as North Auckland by elding 13 of their Test side for this game which had no All Blacks of that day although Sid Going made his rst international appearance In wet conditions the Lions scored two tries within three minutes around the 20-minute mark to wing Keith Savage and anker Ron Lamont That was until Ken Going put a a a a a penalty goal over from wide out although the ball only just eluded the the grasp of a a a a a leaping Alun Pask the the Lions’ No 8 a a a a a ploy that was allowed under the the laws of the the day The performance was important for the the Lions a a a week out from the the rst Test They had lost to to Southland Otago and and Wellington on on successive weekends and also drawn 6-6 with Bay of Plenty 7 North Harbour 13 Lions 29 Mount Smart Stadium Penrose 26 May 1993

Due to their their lack of a a a big enough home base their their game was played at Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland It wasn’t an an especially auspicious occasion – the Lions had too much size and strength up front although seven of the North Harbour eight would play Test rugby The game was marred by by Lions No 8 Dean Richards getting reckless with his boots on Frank Bunce’s ear nearly severing it resulting in in in Richards having to cool off in in in in the sin-bin But it was the the try-scoring ability of the the Lions that shone highlighted as Rob Andrew Rory Underwood Ieaun Evans and Richard Webster all crossed with one try for the home team to Apollo Perelini 28 // OFFICIAL SOUVENIR PROGRAMME
