‘Isla. What do you have to say?’
‘Well ... I think Paris and Jess are right. We haven’t seen her, but dad said that she is kind. She can’t ever be our mum, can she, Grandma?’
‘No one will ever replace your mum, not even me,’ smiled Tilly, rising from her chair.
The elderly rabbit was ill-prepared for their questions and put the kettle on to allow herself a moment to think. Her daughter-in-law, Lottie, had died in a catastrophic flood that had swept through their old home. She took a deep breath, turned and said:
‘I don’t deny that you have had a tough time since your mum died and things haven’t always gone according to plan. But, one important fact remains: your dad loves you and always will. Having a special friend won’t change that.
‘I never expected to be looking after grandchildren at my time of life. It isn’t easy, but I do it because I love my family and according to you; I make the best apple crumble in the valley.
‘What do you suppose would happen if I wasn’t here? Have any of you thought about that? No way could you look after yourselves, your home and go to school. Your dad would have to stay here because he couldn’t work like he does now. With less money coming in you would go without. No more takeaways, new clothes, books, socks or shoes – and don’t even think about the bank of your Aunt Dolly,’ she snapped, looking directly at Paris.
