Mrs Weston had gone to let the chickens out and was shocked to find that five birds were missing. She had examined the garden fencing for signs of a break-in or any evidence of a scuffle. The latch on the pen was secure and not a single feather was found in the back or front garden to warrant reporting the incident to the local police. Mrs Weston had gone back to the cottage where her three children were finishing their breakfast.
‘Sorry to tell you, kids, five of the chickens are missing. They must have escaped but I don’t recall leaving the front gate open last night. I’ll walk along the lane and see if they are in the meadow.’
‘Perhaps a fox sneaked in, killed them and took them back to his den for supper,’ declared Jacob.
