We are making noticeable
progress with the RAVC
History project. Mr Rob
McIntosh has interviewed
over 20 serving and
ex-serving RAVC members
to date. While researching
through some old les, I
spotted an issue in Chiron
Calling from 1997 with an
article from Major Robert G
Mares who had undertaken
the task of updating the
Corps history from 1961
to 1996. Sadly he passed
away at a young age. I also
came across a letter dated
11 July 2000 from Maj
Gen JMF Hall, who was the
RAVC Colonel Commandant, in which he stated that “the Corps Council had passed a motion in March 2000 for a committee to be formed to consider updating the Corps History”. But for many reasons this goal was never achieved. However, we are now on this road and we hope that by this time next year will be able to see Volume 3 of the RAVC History. Mr Rob McIntosh collected 9 hours of interviews over a two day visit to North Luffenham and Melton Mowbray in the Summer and we are most grateful to everyone who have given up their valuable time to contribute to this key project to date.
I was most encouraged on my return from leave to see so many articles from the DAC and 1 MWD Regt waiting to go in this edition. There are some very
interesting articles which, I am sure, you will enjoy reading and we thank everyone including our young contributors from both units for their effort and for taking the time to write these articles. In particular, there is an interesting article about a German Army Dog Training School by Pte Carly Abbs that explains the contrast in dog training between the two armies. Whereas Pte Keely Judge gives an account of her adventure training canoeing along
the Grand Canyon. Likewise, many of our newly joined Reservist are producing some exciting articles. The editorial team join me in thanking you all.
We marked the loss of three of our soldiers who were killed in action in Northern Ireland and Afghanistan by the dedication of trees in their names at the National Memorial Arboretum in May. We also had a very good day at the Corps’s annual Morning Service at the Royal Hospital Chelsea in July when all the drinks were on our in-pensioner SSgt Ted Parsons. This was a most generous gesture by Ted, but someone did mention that we were after all visiting him at his home.
Much as the editorial team, I am sure that all our readers will also enjoy reading this edition.
