July can be one of the hottest and driest months of the year, so keeping your veg patch well watered is extremely important. You can do a number of things to help with this including mulching. This not only keeps the plant moist and cool but keeps the weeds down as well. Don’t forget to keep
a daily eye on any plants in containers, particularly hanging baskets, most of which may need watering daily.
It’s also a good month to keep on with
any direct sowing of vegetables including Beetroot, Carrots, Chard, Lettuce, Peas, Radishes and Spring Onions. With the soil temperature being so much warmer, you should be able to see signs of germination for some of these in around a week.
If you haven’t planted them yet, then you can still put Leeks in. Water them well the night before, then make a hole with a dibber 6in deep and 6in between plants and a spacing of around 12in between rows. Place
a Leek in each hole and fill the hole with water. There is no need to fill in the hole with soil.
If you have a polytunnel or greenhouse, then ventilation is key, not only for creating ideal growing conditions, but for preventing fungal diseases such as mildew. If you have Tomatoes you should now be removing sideshoots and regularly tying in the plants as they increase in size.
