South East
Region Report
The weekend of 12 -13 April was the National Gardening Weekend at RHS Wisley, where the South East Panel were invited to get involved. The weather was more like summer than spring and the visitors came in large numbers.
The RHS theme for this event was sunflowers, and we invited and encouraged children to plant a sunflower seed in a pot and take it home with them. The children left with words ringing in their ears to come back in October to the Taste of Autumn show with pictures of their specimens. There
were plenty of questions and enquiries about
all areas of allotment gardening. Thank you
to David, Sylvia, Chris and Cheryl for
helping me on the stand and giving
up their weekend in order to make
it so successful.
Whilst I have your attention can I ask that everyone who has passed their email address to Head Office please check that the address has been
recorded correctly because there have been occasions whereby in trying to contact you the mail has come ‘bouncing’ back? Steve Clements

OBITUARY -
Peter John James
1944 - 2014
Northfields Allotments Club, Hunstanton, Norfolk, was saddened by the passing of Peter James. Peter was a
plot holder in November 2002 when the Club was formed to manage the allotments on behalf of Hunstanton Town Council.
He became Secretary in 2006
and later Chairman, just before other commitments forced
him to give up his plot in 2011. Peter gave unstintingly of his
time in pursuance of the Club’s administration and activities.
After retiring from Northfields,
Peter continued to support the
Club in other ways, including deployment of his artistic talents
in the Club’s annual entry for the Hunstanton Christmas Tree Festival!
Peter had a keen interest in the National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners. He went on to be a founder member of the NSALG Norfolk Group, becoming Chairman in 2006. He was one of the judges for Northfields annual allotments competition. Peter was made an Honorary Member of Northfields.
Peter was a microbiologist and lectured in the subject.
It was through lecturing that he met Judith, a languages lecturer, and they had a happy marriage. Peter was a man of letters and a prolific writer. Inevitably, most of Peter’s written output included at least one word or phrase in Latin! He will be greatly missed by his many friends.
David Elvidge, Northfields Allotments Club, Secretary.
Peter possessed the rare ability of naturally enjoying
the company of people at all levels, and apart from his accomplishments in music and amateur dramatics, his other great love was model making. He used this skill to great effect to make a superb model of an allotment garden. This so impressed the judges at the Norfolk Show that the NSALG stall won a bronze medal, third best in show; a wonderful accolade for the Norfolk branch competing against hundreds of professional stalls.
I attended Peter’s funeral with our mutual friend Philip Hoste-Davis, formerly Norfolk branch secretary and treasurer from Kings Lynn. It was a poignant reminder that allotments are not just about growing fruit and vegetables but also about meeting people and making friends.
Peter will be fondly remembered for his modesty, charm and gentle humour, which made his company such a delight; may he rest in peace.
Doug Smith, Mayor of Sheringham and member of Weston Terrace Allotment Association.
