National Allotments Week
13 to 19 August 2018 – Living and Growing
This year’s theme highlights the importance of growing
your own food and the Society would like to see everyone incorporating fruit and vegetable gardening in some way in to their lives; however small. Herbs on a balcony, an apple tree on a patio, strawberries in hanging baskets or tomatoes in a big pot by the back door - ripe and ready to pop in a salad. Growing at home can help people on allotment waiting lists hone their horticultural skills and raises awareness for children of how and where their food is produced. As we
are all aware growing on an allotment plot adds many more bene ts for individuals, society and the environment. So, let’s open our gates during the 2018 campaign week, show off our skills, share our joy in gardening and communal endeavour and get everyone living and growing!
New lea ets for 2018
Look out for a guide to “Showing what you grow”, some ideas for “Activities with children”, “Understanding your Tenancy Agreement”, “How the Water Regulation have an impact on your Allotment” and “Disabilities and Allotments”. Lea ets will be available at shows, to download on the website and sent out to new members. They are also available for allotment authorities to purchase in bulk, contact natsoc@nsalg.org.uk.

HOLIDAY
A special-interest guided tour of the beautiful island of Sri Lanka, scheduled for November 2018.
We have organised a gentle-paced holiday to allow everyone to fully appreciate all aspects of the vibrant culture and landscape of this tropical island.
Many vegetables we grow at home are also cultivated in Sri Lanka; additionally, we will visit a tea plantation, the Coconut Research Institute, and a fascinating discussion and lecture from the Agricultural department of the University of Kandy.
The magni cent Botanical Gardens in Kandy are packed with a wide range of spectacular plants, including a most impressive variety of orchids. In the evening, the exotic and colourful Kandyan dancing is not to be missed.
Wildlife is everywhere. Those with an urge to see elephants, a multitude of colourful gardens, and with luck a leopard, will be captivated by a visit to Yala National Park.
We will conclude the tour with some time on a tropical beach resort before returning to the UK.
The tour price is £1200 per person for a double room, with a single supplement of £400. It is a 12 day tour- international ights are extra. The special price includes the cost of very good accommodation and all meals throughout the trip.
This offer is available to members of the National Allotment Society on a rst-come basis. If you are interested in this food-growing cultural trip, a full itinerary is available via natsoc@nsalg.org.uk.
What your Regional
Representative or
Mentor can do for you...
Along with their role on the Society’s Management Board, NAS Regional Representatives deal with local member issues and offer support to sites under threat of disposal. Regional Representatives are supported in their role by the Allotment Mentors and both can offer advice and support around issues such as where to go for funding, how to set up an association, becoming self-managed, disability access, different ways to promote your plots, working with community groups, what to do about security concerns or setting up an allotment project.
Please do not hesitate to get in touch.
