                Allotment Beekeeping
Keeping the landlord and allotmenteers informed from an early stage of your beekeeping intentions on the allotment is often the key to success.
Earlier this year, an allotmenteer of West Sussex did just that. He already knew that another beekeeper had an apiary on an allotment, but he wasn’t sure that the council would
be willing to have another. The council was happy to have more bees, but they wanted him to have a central plot, away from the surrounding houses. There was already a detailed contract in place – it included clauses on insurance, bee type, maximum dimensions of the apiary, screening to prevent bees from ying into other allotmenteers, membership of the BBKA, and knowledge of swarm management.
‘The positivity and encouragement from these people
has really put me at ease,’ says the allotmenteer. ‘Other allotmenteers have shown interest and excitement. One even helped me to build the apiary and another asked me to hurry up and get my bees on site as he wanted more pollinators! I just hope the bees are as kind to them as they have been to me!’ He also offers one extra piece of advice: ‘Have a rst aid kit on site in case someone gets stung.’
