Lord Snowden at one of the early Naidex exhibitions. He would have something to say about the state of the industry!
In 1992 a business plan was produced by a small group of Council members to identify the direction that the Association should take in the future. The plan was presented to members at a meeting following the AGM that year and was billed as ‘a plan for change’. It aimed to ensure that BSTA focussed clearly in its role – ‘to support the particular needs of rms in our sector of the industry – suppliers of services and equipment for those with special physical needs.’ It was the rst time that a business plan had been presented to members and one of the main proposals in the plan was a name change. The Council favoured ASPN – Association of Suppliers for Special Physical
Needs.
The name change proposal didn’t get support from member companies, with very different responses from the various sections. Some were very much in favour, some very much against and some didn’t have a view either way. The decision was made to keep the BSTA name but that the logo should be updated. However, much of the business plan was accepted and implemented in the following months.

At the rst BSTA Council meeting
I attended I was struck by the number of eponymous companies. They out-numbered ordinary ones. They included Messrs Salt, Poole, Thackray, Bullen, Siddall - I felt very small wit”hout any ancestors being in the trade.
