Durham ACF Rifles Cadets win places on top Canadian marksmanship course
Three Durham ACF cadets have been awarded places on a six- week long Army Cadet Leader Instructor Marksmanship Course (ACLIM) based at Connaught Ranges, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, in July and August this year.
This is a tremendous achievement for three cadets from one unit to be selected for the 14 strong squad selected from army cadets across the UK. They were selected because of their good track record in .22mm and 7.62 target rifle shooting and because they were considered to be good ambassadors for the ACF.
All Rifles cadets - Cadet Corporal Yves Hughes and Lance Corporal Kane Storey, from Chester-le-Street Detachment,
and Cpl Kathryn Burnell, from Durham Detachment - flew off
to Canada on 7 July, after participating at the Inter-Services Cadet Rifle Meeting at the National Shooting Centre, Bisley.
They will participate in three major meetings – the Canadian Cadet Full-bore meeting (solely for Cadets), and the Ontario
Rifle Association Meeting and the Dominion of Canada Rifle Association Meeting, which are attended by top marksmen from around the world. There is also emphasis on learning to instruct correctly and cadets are tested on their abilities to teach subjects such as drill, marksmanship etc. They will also participate in adventure training, sports and bush-craft activities. There will be cultural visits in and around Ottawa and the highlight of their visit is to Niagara Falls. They will be totally integrated with Canadian Cadets and will make friends for life.
