Golf Society Meets RGJ GS at Littlestone
This match, traditionally the RGJ AGM, remains in the fixture list but is organised by the RGJ GS who compete for a number of trophies linked to the antecedent regiment. It has a long tradition and TRGS are keen to support it in the future.
The Farmers Boys (DERR) Golf Society
21 Farmers Boys met at Newbury and Crookham Golf Club on
12 and 13 June 2014 for some wonderful golf on 2 glorious June days. This was the first time that our annual meeting was held at the club and it was a huge success, a lovely course in excellent condition with extremely helpful and welcoming members and staff. We were delighted that once again a serving soldier from the Rifles, WO1 Peter North, the RSM of the Infantry Battle School at Brecon, was able to join us and I remain keen for more serving soldiers to attend in the future, particularly from 1, 4 and 5 Rifles due to their geographic proximity.
Prizes were won as follows:
• Medal Gross:
o 1st - The Gilson Trophy – Kevin Flay.
o 2nd - The Bone Beaker – Dave Gardner. o 3rd – Tony Flay.
• Medal Nett:
o 1st - The Gilson Bowl – Terry Dollimore. o 2nd - The Gamble Cup – Peter North. o 3rd – Garry O’Doherty.
• Stableford Singles:
o 1st (21 handicap and below) - The James Cup – Steve McIntyre. o 2nd (21 handicap and below) – The Shorncliffe Cup – Ron Cooke. o 3rd (21 handicap and below) – Dave Gardner.
Farmers Boys Golf match vs Infantry Battle School at Cradoc Golf Course on 25 July
o 1st (22 handicap and above) - The Education Cup – Paul McLeod.
o 2nd (22 handicap and above) – John Marsh.
o 3rd (22 handicap and above) – Terry Dollimore.
• Nearest the Pin (3rd) – Paul McLeod.
• Longest Drive (13th) – Peter North.
• Most Golf Played – The “Frog” Trophy – Iain Tait.
• And the “Bandit” trophy, nominated and awarded by the
previous year’s winner, was presented to Mike Cornwell. As a regular recipient of the Frog in recent years it was felt important that Mike left with a trophy.
A highlight of the year was an invitation from WO1 Peter North to play a match against the Infantry Battle School at Cradoc Golf
Club. 14 Farmers Boys were on parade and were magnificently hosted in the Warrant Officers and Sergeants Mess to a curry
supper and games evening, followed by the match itself which took place on 25 July. Being 2 days before the 134th
anniversary of the Battle of Maiwand the competition was called the Maiwand Challenge Cup. The course was a real
challenge and in the finest spirit of sport in the Regiment it went down to the wire with the Farmers Boys narrowly beating the Infantry Battle School by 303 points to 294.
