OBITUARIES
BARTRAM, Col Kit MA TD DL husband of Josephine and Father of Robert and Edward, died peacefully in his sleep on Friday 18th October 2013. Born on 29th August 1927, son of Lt-Col
R A Bartram MC TD JP and Mrs W H Bartram
of Shotton Hall, Castle Eden, County Durham. Kit was educated at Rugby School and after completing national service with the1st Battalion Durham Light Infantry, in Greece, from November 1946 until he transferred to 6 DLI in late 1948 as a territorial. He attended St Catharine’s College Cambridge, where he studied for his MA. A
keen cross-country runner, he was the individual
winner of the TA cross-country championship
in March 1951 and he came fourth in 1952.
In 1956 he had been promoted to Major and
was appointed second in command of 6DLI in
1961, he transferred to the TA Reserve of Officers in1966 and in September 1989 he was appointed Honorary Colonel to 7th Battalion The Light Infantry (Successors of 6th & 8th DLI)
holding this appointment until August 1994. After working in the family business for some time, Kit had moved to London and on returning to live
in the north, at Heighington, he was appointed
to be Chief Executive of the Endeavour Housing Association in 1975,where he was largely responsible for the successful development of the organization.
Like his father before him, in 1950 Colonel Bartram held the office of High Sheriff of County Durham in 1982 and similarly he was Honorary Colonel to his former regiment, 7th Battalion, The Light Infantry, whereas his father’s regiment was the Scottish Horse (79 Regt RA).
Kit was a kind and thoughtful person who was liked by everyone for his patience and understanding. He will be missed by many.
BELL, Harry. Harry died on 5th March 2014 at the age of 93, peacefully at home. Harry served in 11 DLI and was POW in Stalag 8b/(21D) Posen.
ALDERSON, David. David was a member of the DLI as a Regular in 1952. After that he worked as a painter and decorator. He leaves behind 4 children, Linda, David, Brian and Sandra.
BAINBRIDGE, Alan. Alan was born in 1931 and died in October 2013. He served in the 1st Bn Durham Light Infantry and was a Korean veteran.
BAINES, Joe. Joe died on Monday 23 June 2014. Joe served in 1DLI in Berlin, Hong Kong, Borneo and Cyprus.
BLACKBURN Frederick John Barrie, Maj TD. Maj Blackburn died on Sunday 25 May 2014 aged 86 years old. He was in the Royal Army Chaplains Department, and was formerly Chaplain to 8th Bn DLI.
BOWRON, David. David died on the 31 October 2013. He served with 1DLI in Egypt, National Service.
BREGAZZI, Fredrick Charles. Died 6 May 2014. Frederick served in the DLI during WW2.
BURDESS, Tom. Tom died in January 2014. He served in 8DLI.
CARROLL, Mel. Died 15 August 2013.
CLOSE, John Henry died in December 2013. John was born on 19 January 1928. He did his National Service with 1DLI 1946- 1948. He served in the UK and Greece.
DOBSON, Thomas Henry. Ex DLI. Thomas died in December 2013.
DOBSON, Lawrence. Ex DLI. Lawrence died 31 December 2013.
DONKIN, Lawrence Richard. Lawrence THE RIFLES
died on 26 September 2013 at the age of 95. He served with 1DLI in the Western Desert, he was captured at Bazerta, POW for 2 years, escaped from the Italians and made it to Switzerland.
DUNKELD, Andy died on the 24 November 2013. He served with the Durham Light Infantry in Korea.
FINLAY, John (Geordie Jack) Died on 24 March 2014. Formerly Durham Light Infantry.
FUDGE, Dennis. Dennis passed away on Friday 21 March 2014.
GASCOYNE, Albert. Albert died in April 2013 just a month before his 100th birthday.
He served as a Sergeant with the DLI in WW2. His number was 4465141.He was described as exemplary, hard working, honest and trustworthy, and his daughter said that he had maintained that same kind of conduct throughout his life.
HALL, Fred. Fred died in 2013. He was a regular member of the Houghton-le-Spring Branch. Fred served in the Durham Light Infantry.
HUGHES, Ron. Ron died on 31 May 2014 aged 84 years old. He served in 1DLI in Berlin and Korea, and did his National Service in Egypt.
JACQUES, Robert Featherstone. Died 7 May 2014.
JARVIS, Stanley. Stanley died in 2014. He served in 2DLI at Wuppertal in 1952-55 and in 8DLI at Houghton-le-Spring.
KIRSOPP George. George passed away on 6th June 2014 aged 96 years sold. He served with 1DLI.
MADDISON, Kenneth. Kenneth died
in August 2014. He was a Corporal and served in the DLI 02031961 to 19121969.
MARSHALL, Reginald Alan. Born on
17 September 1925 and died on 26 September 2013, Army number 14422455. Reginald served with 8th Battalion DLI in France 1944, Belgium and Holland. Also with 2nd Battalion DLI in the Far East – Burma, Singapore ETC, and Army Reserves 1947.
MAUGHAN, DONALD. Don, as he was known, died on the 8 February 2014. He did his national service with the DLI in Cyprus 1957-59.
McKENZIE, Norman. Norman died at the end of November 2013. He served with as a Cpl in 1DLI and 8DLI and served in Korea.
MOON, Frank Cpl. Frank enlisted in 1933 and was demobbed in 1945. He served in the 6th Bn 50th Division, 8th Army Desert Rat, involved in the following campaigns: Tobruk, Alamein, Dunkirk, Iraq, Anzio Beach and Sicily. He died in April 2014.
NIGHTINGALE, Danny. Danny was born 25 October 1944 and died in 2013. He served in the Durham Light Infantry. He was a regular member of the Houghton-le- Spring Branch.
NORTON, Michael. Michael served with 1DLI in Berlin and Hong Kong. He died on 25 October 2013.
OSWALD, Leslie. Leslie died in March 2014 at the age of 97. He served in the DLI in the Burma Campaign.
PALMER, Ron. Ron died on 31 August 2013. He served in Korea with the DLI in the Assault Pioneers.
