Sounding Retreat
We knew before it began that 2014 would bring disappointment as well as notable events. Disappointment and sadness
came in April 2014 when B Company of 6th Battalion The Rifles left the Army’s ORBAT on conversion to 675 (Rifles) Squadron Army Air Corps. Meanwhile preparation for the major county exhibition commemorating the Great War, known as Somerset Remembers, was opened by Lady Gass, the Lord-Lieutenant, in late July. The project as a whole has run for two years. The exhibition has been very well received.
In the Autumn of 2013 Taunton’s Castle, home to the Somerset Military Museum, was the host to a highly successful Sounding Retreat by the Band and
Bugles of the Waterloo and Salamanca
bands assisted by buglers from Somerset ACF. The newly opened Castle Green, together with Castle House and the moat and provided a dramatic setting for the ceremony. Beforehand all enjoyed a Regimental reception within the Castle’s Great Hall. The importance and place of the Museum in remaining in touch with both County and Regiment cannot be overstated. Meanwhile the more recent news about future reductions in manning levels to county offices poses a challenge for Trustees and all.
The South West Heritage Trust is an exciting development that could see
the Military Museum’s collection and
the Museum itself in good hands for the future. Concerned by the difficulties that
