Cultural Evening
In July 2014 the 3rd Battalion organised
a Cultural Evening at Central Hall, West Tollcross in Edinburgh. The evening was to promote the various cultures that are represented within the Battalion, showcase The Edinburgh Wives Choir and welcome the riflemen back from Kenya.
Attendees were met with refreshments, canapés and displays of bunting and the flags of all the countries these cultures originate from. There was a room decorated with help from local schools within the Garrison area: Colinton Primary, Firhill Secondary, Redhall Primary and Dreghorn Crèche. The children’s work
did their parents proud by sharing their interpretations of what “culture” means to them. As the guests from the battalion and the local area arrived, a short film on what the Battalion had been doing in Kenya was projected on the wall.
In the main auditorium the acts entertaining us through the evening ranged from Fijian wives dancing with their children to the Edinburgh Wives Choir and the Bugles of the 3rd Battalion.
Just before the interval a short video
clip was shown of the support given by
the battlegroup to a local school during Exercise ASKARI STORM before the Bugle Major signalled it was time to eat. Within the
The Fijian wives dance at the battalion’s cultural evening watched by the CO and Commander 51 Brigade
foyer the catering staff served many types of food from all the different cultures, which left everyone very satisfied indeed as not a morsel was left.
The evening ended with the Commanding Officer offering thanks to all those who took
part. The evening was a great success with a very good turnout of around 450 people and we would like to thank all those that supported the event.
