CHIRON CALLING
On 22 Jan 2019 I attended the Potential Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO), cadre held at Army Medical Services Training Centre (AMSTC), Strensall, York, a prerequisite for promotion to LCpl. The cadre was over the period of 12 days and consisted of no less than 19 theory lessons which gave us an introduction to orders, the 7 section battle drills, tactical aide memoires (TAMs), coaching and mentoring and Quick Battle Orders (QBOs). Several students found this mentally challenging and it fell to me to keep morale up especially during the fire and manoeuvre procedures, and section attacks. During the Basic Close Combat Skills (BCCS), phase I successfully led my section through selecting and setting up a hasty ambush on an enemy patrol, keeping good control throughout and directing

into practice.
For me this was
a very valuable
lesson as I didn’t
know much about the subject, but with the planned lessons it gave me much more of an understanding prior to practical application. We were also tasked to do a presentation in front of our own sections to see how we could stand, talk and deliver a lesson in a confident manner.
Our exercise phase was held at Catterick training area towards the latter part of the course. This was held over a

LCpl Angela Morey transferred from the RAVC Reserve to the QARANC, and over 16 weeks of training and consistently excelled. In recognition of this Angela was presented ‘The Leith McGregor Award’ on the 6th December 2018 at her Passing Out parade. The awarding committee concluded; LCpl Morey demonstrated a high degree of determination in their approach to every aspect of training, such as outstanding strength of character, consistently displaying high personal standards and administration, an excellent understanding of application of their Service Core Values and Standards and a willingness to assist and support their fellow trainees. LCpl Morey has since been assigned to The Defence and National Rehabilitation Centre at Stanford Hall, Loughborough. All readers wish LCpl Morey and her family all the very best for the future.

final attack we encountered a Directing Staff (DS) appointed casualty to
extract. This was mentally and physically challenging but at the end it was also exhilarating, and I was proud of myself for completing it and not giving up.
All my hard work payed dividends and lead to a strong pass and I am now a substantive LCpl within 1 MWD Regt. It has made it even more satisfying knowing that I’m the first ever Reserve Private to be promoted to be in the Reserve Squadron.
