I would like to start my editorial for this edition by reflecting on a memorable centenary year in 2018 when we achieved everything we had planned to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the RAVC being awarded their Royal Warrant by King George V in 1918. Perhaps when our successors will look back on how we celebrated the occasion in another century they will be living in a more digitised world, but at least they will have a record of all the hard work that everyone had put in during this unforgettable year. With evolution, one cannot help wondering, whether the digital memory that we have carefully captured for posterity will or can be used for our future generations. Nonetheless, the Bronze Bust of our Colonel in Chief, HRH The Princess Royal and the Centenary Scroll will most definitely serve as a suitable reminder that we went to some length to mark the year with gusto.
Our main emphasis this year will be the publication of Volume 3 of the RAVC history covering the period 1961 to date. For a number of reasons the release of the book has been delayed, but we are hoping that it will not be too long before our readers are able to hold their own copy of the third volume of the RAVC history in their hands.
The Corps has welcomed a number of young soldiers and officers over recent years and when I have met some at Corps events, it has been most pleasing to see their enthusiasm and interest in not only their professional life, but also in regimental matters and the esprit de corps. With the DATR at Melton Mowbray and 1 MWD Regt at North Luffenham, unlike many other Corps, we could argue that we do have a home in the middle of Leicestershire. Lt Howard Rose has a very interesting account of his first year as a Veterinary Officer in the RAVC which will be of interest to anyone contemplating joining the Army.
There is a myriad of articles in this edition
that I am sure you will enjoy reading. We have the usual adventurous training activities that are recounted by our troops who have been on various challenging pursuits to extend their survival and leadership skills. There are also a number of articles that some of our Reservists have written and one in particular is the dog decoy (biting) course that LCpl Lloyd attended with Thames Valley Police. As there is an appetite for some technical and professional subjects, we look forward to our contributors to send in some articles on their line of work and researches that may be of interest to our readers.
We say a huge thank you to WO2 (RQMS) Craig Woodall who has now left the editorial team on his posting to North Luffenham and we welcome SSgt Matthew Eade (Matt) as the new member on the team.
Finally, I would like to thank Lt Col (Retd) Chris Ham, Major Stewart Barr and Captain Josh Welbourn for their support in maintaining the interest amongst our troops who continually produce the articles for this magazine.
