AJAX; the Future of Strike from a Commander’s Perspective
ATDU AJAX User Engagement Team Mobility SME
To operate an AJAX from a commander’s perspective is like stepping into the future. Crew comfort is better than it has ever been in an armoured fighting vehicle. It gives crews the ability and confidence to operate in all environments and will lead the way on the modern battlefield.
The platform’s survivability suite – comprising of a collective protection system – is the biggest game changer for me. It en- ables the crew to operate under armour in all environments, such as a chemical or biological weapon environment. Another part of the survivability system that will give us the edge is the Laser Warning and Acoustic Shot Detection system which pro- vides the crew with early warning of a threat, giving them the vital extra time to react.
AJAX is a complete game changer for the user with its advanced levels of Mobility, Lethality, Survivability, Communications and
Intelligence through its revolutionary Electronic Architecture. The high levels of reliability will allow the platform to operate for longer periods without Combat Service Support, which leg- acy platforms simply cannot match. AJAX will be able to send high definition video and pictures throughout the battlefield to the new generation of AFV’s, CR2 LEP, WCSP, Boxer and air systems to give an all-informed battlespace.
The modern army is working towards a fully integrated bat- tlespace management system, enabling communications be- tween land, sea and air – AJAX achieves this. The combined awareness systems will give the fighting crew and driver the abil- ity to observe, listen, engage and navigate from within the vehi- cle while maintaining awareness of their surroundings. AJAX is the future, and with its potential for growth, it will remain at the cutting edge.

The Armoured Trials and Development Unit, AJAX User Engagement Team
The ATDU AJAX User Engagement Team represents the User. Voice of the soldier, conscience of the Army.
It has been a very interesting and dynamic year for the ATDU AJAX User Engagement Team. As a team in 2019 we have at- tended a wide range of trials across the World. These trials have been in support of Mobility, Lethality & Survivability, C4I and Special to Role domains, including crew operation and Human Factors Integration. In 2020 the team will expand significantly, moving forward into Reliability Growth Trials. Verification and Validation trials will continue to ensure the best possible prod- uct is delivered to the Field Army.
SSgt Smith is currently posted to ATDU as the Automotive Lead with the AJAX User Engagement Team, providing User SME advice to Defence Industry, Defence Equipment & Sup- port and Army HQ during trials. He acts as an official User wit- ness / observer, using his experience to ensure Defence Industry meets the requirements for AJAX, thus ensuring the Field Army receive the best possible Strike platform. Tpr Klein, posted to the same project in October 19 where he is employed as an AJAX driver; he will be completing all Reliability Growth Trials that lead up to the final AJAX Build Standard. SSgt Hodge is the sole AJAX Troop Leader at ATDU, managing a multi-cap badge team. His role covers the main responsibilities of a Troop Leader and he also acts as the A/RCMO and Trg WO for the AJAX team.
