    Fred was born in 1923 and left school in 1937 at the age of 14. He was variously employed as a radio station messenger, a tailor’s cutter and latterly as a milk roundsman, having also found time to unsuccessfully volunteer for air crew du- ties in the RAF. However, in 1942 he was called up for military service. His basic training took place in Bodmin and ad- vanced trade training was undertaken in Catterick and then Bovington where he learnt to drive a multitude of both
17-year-old sweetheart during his embarkation leave. Young love maybe but their union lasted until Edie’s death in 1988.
Fred was sent by troopship out to Algiers and posted to the 17/21L where he found himself in 2 Troop B Squadron as Ser- geant Reg Povey’s driver which he was throughout the war. Fred fought with the regiment throughout the North African cam- paign and, most notably, during B Squadron’s do or die attempt to reconnoitrer the pass at Fondouk. Here the tank struck a mine and was disabled forcing the crew to bail out. After the North Africa campaign Fred, was moved to Naples and on to the battle at Monte Cassino. At one stage he had to drive the tank along the ‘mad mile’ which was a straight road which ran for a mile or more in full view of the German artillery. Later in the battle
 wheeled and tracked vehicles. Following completion of his training Fred at the tender age of 19 was able to marry Edie, his
