REGIMENTAL JOURNAL OF THE ROYAL LANCERS (QUEEN ELIZABETHS’ OWN)
 The Peto Cup
To step into the ring takes courage, determination and for all the Royal Lancers boxers, relentless training.
The culmination of this for many is the Peto Cup. The prelimi- nary rounds were well attended and provided the ideal oppor- tunity for some of the less experienced boxers to cut their teeth in the ring. Notably, the Welfare Officer, Capt Hough, took to the ring against the newest subaltern, 2Lt Thompson. Tpr Ex- ton produced a strong display to nullify the power of Sergeant Wooderson to send himself through to the super-heavyweight final.
Thanks to an outstanding effort by the boxing officer, Capt Cal- linan, Mr Nyambira, SSgt Burnell and the dedication of all the coaches and gym staff, finals’ night was set to be electric. There were many notable moments. Firstly, Cpls Shacklady and Good- ing fought three rounds of punishing boxing for Cpl Shacklady to triumph by a split decision.
Yet the most memorable fight was in the heavyweight category where Capt Gardner faced off against Lieutenant Batterbury. Muscles bulging, Lt Batterbury came out swinging, breaking his opponents nose, with the ring shaking as he hurled huge rights. Capt Gardner rallied, his fitness coming to the fore and he sur- vived the onslaught to match his opponent punch for punch be- fore growing in dominance to take victory for his Squadron. The referee congratulated both boxers for a hard-fought bout.
The Best Boxer went to Capt Gardner, D Squadron. The Most Gallant to Tpr Simcox, D Squadron and The Peto Cup winning team for 2019 was D Squadron, coached by Corporal Bott and Trooper Bilsland. The guest of honour was Brigadier James Martin DSO OBE MC. With the Regiment only recently moving into 1 Armoured Infantry Brigade the
night provided the ideal opportunity to showcase the fighting spirit of the Royal Lancers. Joining the boxing teams in the Warrant Officers’ and Sergeants’ Mess, he spoke of the exciting future for the Brigade and saluted the admirable performances of the boxers.
Yet, the Regiment’s boxing success was not over. Moving straight into a relentless training camp for the Brigade boxing the Royal Lancers looked poised for success... and LCpl Pot- ter of B Squadron delivered. Winning his fight against a strong Royal Dragoon Guards opponent he claimed the Brigade Wel- terweight title.
