In late August 2019, the Regiment welcomed Lt Jack Sheehan from the Australian 1st Armoured Regiment as part of the Long Look Exchange Program. Long Look is a reciprocal ex- change between the UK and Australian Defence Force, which also saw Capt George Marriott spending time in an Australian Armoured Cavalry Regiment from September to December. The program exposes participants to different procedures, equip- ment, personnel and cultures of the host units, whilst also broad- ening their military experience and professional knowledge.
During my time on Long Look, I have been lucky enough to par- ticipate in a number of key training activities. Particular high- lights include the Gunnery Camp in September, which served as a good introduction to the technical side of British Armoured Cavalry, and an opportunity to integrate within the Regiment. Other highlights include participating in B and D Squadrons’ simulated exercise down south in Warminster, as well as partici- pating in Exercise GALLOPING DRAGOON with the Light Dragoons in the wet and wonderful Galloway Forrest. Other highlights include the Regimental boxing evening, participating in Remembrance Day activities in Scotland, Exercise FINAL FLING, as well as the numerous social events held within the Officers’ Mess.
Exercise FINAL FLING
I would like to thank everyone who made my time with The Royal Lancers such an enjoyable and rewarding experience. C Squadron as a whole was an extremely welcoming organisa- tion to be a part of, and I would like to extend my gratitude to OC C Sqn, Maj Bam, 2IC C Sqn, Capt Harry Marriott, all the Troop Leaders, and Support Troop, with special mention going to Sgt Brad Smith and Sgt Chris Chianca.
I would highly encourage all members of the Regiment to ap- ply for any similar exchanges in the future if provided the op- purtunity. The professional development gained from these pro- grams is second to none, and above all, it is a highly enjoyable experience.
