of his sous chef, Lt Titcomb. Horsfall’s “sugar infused chicken thighs” from his wife’s Ballymaloe cooking course turned out to be “not sugar infused and not cooked chicken thighs”. Worse still the fumes from this experimental folly almost killed the entire party and Horsfall is seriously lucky to have not been re- ferred to DSTL or the Counter-Terrorism hotline for producing the next batch of chicken-infused sarin.
On a more positive note a number of firsts were had on the hill as the Officers’ Mess contributed heavily to the annual culling of hinds from the herds, not least thanks to 2Lt “Bambi-Slayer” Ozanne. Clays were shot, Munros were scrambled and a wonder- ful service was held in Golspie on the morning of Remembrance Sunday to round off a thoroughly enjoyable exercise.
Warrant Officers’ and Sergeants’ Mess
2019 was a high tempo year but, as always, The Warrant Offic- ers’ and Sergeants’ Mess fought through the tight programme to produce some outstanding functions, along with supporting Regimental events and hosting several visits.
The top seat in the Mess was handed over to WO1 (RSM) M Pook in March 2019, but not before dining out the old Regimen- tal Sergeant Major, Capt K Hough.
Following summer stand down the Mess was on the road as a collective with the whole Regiment deployed to Castlemartin range (CMR) complex in Wales. Under the direction of the PMC (WO2 Nyambira) they packed up anything that wasn’t bolted down from the Bar area and reconstructed a temporary Mess in CMR. This was a great environment and enjoyed by all. Dur- ing this period the Mess gained a lot of new members in the form of the whole Officers’ Mess, who also took full advantage of our facilities. A games night was the highlight while in CMR with games such as pool, darts, apple bobbing, bridging and the
famous food challenge. With no surprise at the outcome, the wooden spoon went to the Officers.
Just to mention a few Regimental events and visits that the War- rant Officers’ and Sergeants’ Mess supported throughout 2019: The Regimental weekend, Long Service and Good Conduct presentations, Crew Commanders’ dinner night, RAC Honorary Colonel, Dame Kelly Holmes’ visit and The Peto Cup – and the list is still not exhausted.
To finish off a great year, and before the members of the Mess took some well-deserved time off with their families and friends, we attended the Christmas ball. This year held in the Warrant Officers’ and Sergeants’ Mess with a winter wonderland theme complemented by cocktails, casino stands, and a saxophone player thrown into the mix. A fantastic evening enjoyed by all.
Now into the final working week of 2019, we had one main event to conquer. Seniors vs Officer rugby. With the last victory a blur
