On 24th – 26th May 2019, Capt Henson participated in a charity cycle in the Highlands of Scotland in support of the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM). This charity of- fers support to combat the staggering rates of male suicide in the UK; with their helpline and webchat giving people the opportu- nity to talk through their problems, as well as find information and specialist services. With twenty others in the group the aim was to raise as much money for CALM as possible, while raising awareness for male suicide prevention.
The three-day challenge provided a suitably gruelling undertak- ing to drum up some serious support. Starting in Fort William, it was 240 hard miles up the North West coast with 18,000ft of elevation; really putting the inexperienced group through their paces. The highlight was without doubt the Bealach na Bà pass; a six mile stretch that climbs from sea level up to 2,053ft and is rated one of the top climbs in the UK. The final day looked to be an easy run in with only 53 miles following two days of over 90 miles. However, the weather gods had other ideas and the condi- tions could only be described as biblical. Ferocious headwinds laced with torrential icy rain prevailed all day and it was a bat- tered and relieved group who enjoyed a few drinks at the final stop in Altnacealgach.
Overall it was a great challenge that really stretched all the par- ticipants, with some great displays from a group of amateur first-timers. At times it was torturous, drawing on all resolve to keep the bike moving into the wind or up the hills. At others it was magnificent; everyone joyously eating up the miles with ease and smiles on their faces. Most importantly it generated a huge amount of interest and generous support for CALM, rais- ing £29,272 for a really important cause – a huge thank you to all who donated.
