Maj Purbrick trying his best to look stylish... ...a man in perfect control... ...and realising he’s actually quite high up
ally wanting to get into the hustle and bustle of the race, despite Capt Kellard’s urgings. The pair pulled up going down the back straight for the second time – far better to bring the horse home in one piece when there is no chance of winning, than try to jump around the rest of the course and risk unnecessary injury. Despite the disappointment, trainer, owner and jockey were all in agreement that this just wasn’t Vinny’s day. All roads lead to a more fruitful 2020 racing season.
Elsewhere in the world, Maj Purbrick ventured out to Kenya to explore the Masai Mara from the back of a horse. Capt Henson, having sustained a broken neck in a hunting accident 12 months ago, was back out on the Leicestershire hunting field braving the Belvoir country hedges once again. Lancers are regularly attend- ing riding lessons up at Hollies Stables in Richmond and the intention is to get a good Lancer showing on the Bedale hunting field towards the end of the 2020 season.
Our thanks to the trustees, Hollies Riding stables and all of the trainers who are brave enough to let Capt Kellard ride their race-
horses, for enabling such brilliant sport.

While acknowledging that some Judokas (Judo players) have not performed, a few have achieved consistency and favour- able results during training camps and gradings moving up in their “Kyu” (Level of proficiency) rankings.
This year’s solid achievers were Sgt Popplewell (U90Kgs), Tpr Hughes (U63kgs) and Tpr Moss (U100kgs) all of whom entered and collected silverware in the Army Judo Championships 2019. After two years of training camps and building fighting experi- ence, the time was in favour of Lancers Judokas to dominate the championship. As the underdogs, it was fair to say we stunned a few faces and made our mark with Tpr Hughes fighting his heart out to be crowned the Army Champion of 2019. An achievement that may have seemed too far to reach but, with his dedication and strategy he achieved the once impossible. Alongside him was Tpr Moss who fought in a much more competitive and
