dominated category. Sticking to his game plan and focus, he scored some fantastic Ippons against his bigger opponents com- ing third in the whole of the British Army. Moss demonstrated he cannot only put pies away but anyone that slips in the Dojo will feel his wrath.
However, Sgt Popplewell has been the Lancer’s real dark horse this year, collecting the most silverware. During the Army Cham- pionships, he entered with a REME team claiming the bronze medal in the men’s teams. He continued to excel in the indi- vidual’s category by fighting his way to the finals of the U90kgs. This proved a bit much and lost after putting up a fight to win his well-deserved silver medal. Eager and still hungry for more, Sgt Popplewell entered the Inter-Service Championships but this time, 10kgs lighter compared to the Army Championships. It is worth noting that the U81kgs category is the most competi- tive category in Judo. In fact, across most fighting sports, this weight category is the hardest with some light and fast fighters. However, Sgt Popplewell stood his ground and left a mark for himself despite being the lowest belt and least experienced in the whole tournament. He came fifth in the individual “Kyu” grades and won the bronze medal in the masters. Old he may be, but Popplewell still has fast hands and quick feet to score ippons that deliver a destroying punch to his opponents.

A huge year for the Lancers Judokas putting the Motto on the scoreboard with hopes to take it a step further in the coming years. A small team but bigger results than anyone anticipated. We will continue to train and plan to achieve better results for our Judokas in 2020 and beyond.

The Royal Lancers have enjoyed an exciting year powerlift- ing. The 2019 season started with ‘Army Full Power’, an annual competition that sees soldiers compete in three dis- ciplines (squat, bench, and deadlift), which was hosted by the Regiment in Catterick. Over 90 lifters took part, including seven from across the Regiment. It was an amazing competition with a fantastic atmosphere. SSgt Pennington finished second in the
100KG category, missing out narrowly on the win, an effort which earned him the second-best lifter of the day out of the 70 males who took part, earning a place in the Army team. The standard of the lifting was on another level with records all around. Special mention to SSgt Marx REME and LCpl Lang- ton AGC (SPS) in their first completion placing third in each of their weight categories.
