                                 ROTARY CLUB
Community Work
It was good the hear about the recent Thrapston Community Rotary Shoebox Appeal day at the Plaza Centre. A lot of work goes into this appeal. Congratulations to all those who make it such a success.
Along with our active support for Sailability over the summer and early autumn, club members have enjoyed a series of interesting talks and presentations in recent weeks.
One particularly thought provoking talk was about working with vulnerable children,
role of Befrienders who provide a listening
ear and companionship to isolated people. Colin then spent time describing the Volunteer Driver scheme. This scheme is very important because it enables people who are over 65 or mobility restricted to get to a variety of places like Doctors and Hospital appointments. Since bus services and other modes of transport are limited in the area, the charity has provided around 7,000 trips in the last year. Volunteer drivers can decide when they are available, and
  children with additional needs and
children with behaviour issues. Our
speaker, Karen, was from Adelaide,
South Australia. She described how
practice has changed with the role of multidisciplinary teams in supporting children and families. Some children
receive an intensive support plan,
which includes a period of careful observation to try and identify the triggers for behaviour. Other interventions include working with parents on how to support the child and developing positive parenting strategies. It was good to hear of successful outcomes.
More recently, Colin Brown, a Trustee of the charity Oundle Volunteer Action, outlined some of the services they provide to support the communities in Oundle, Thrapston and the surrounding villages. He described the
how much they can do each week.
They then receive a mileage allowance for their journeys. The charity is particularly looking for volunteers in Thrapston and the surrounding area, since there is a demand for services, but a shortage of volunteers. Further details can be found on the website www.

Hopefully, by the time you read this, we will
have had a report back from the Scouts that we supported to help them attend the World Scouts Jamboree in South Korea. It will be interesting to hear their account after the coverage we all saw on our news screens in August.
Plans are now in place for our annual carol service and more details will be included in the next issue.
