 Army Cadet Sports Personality
Of the Year Award 2023
By Major Mick Bell
Cadet Sergeant Zoe McCosh is the first ever Cadet Sports Personality of the year recipient awarded by the Army Sports Council. The award was made at a formal event in London; however, unfortunately Sgt McCosh was unable to attend due to age restrictions.
She is the current ACF National Sports Champion at Long Jump, 1500 metres and Team Orienteering and was also a National Finalist in Cross Country. Sgt McCosh was also a triple gold medallist at the Regional (NE) swimming event, unfortunately no national event took place. No doubt Zoe would have added to her national
titles given the opportunity.
A worthy winner of the National
Army award, well done Zoe.

  SSI Neil Goodwin
By Major Mick Bell
It was with great sadness that the County was informed of the passing of SSI Neil Goodwin on the 28th of September 2023.
Neil was the husband of Major Michelle Goodwin, previously OC A Company, now the Assistant Commandant YNW ACF. Neil joined YNW ACF in 2011, alongside his Reserve Forces service, serving in both Iraq and Bosnia during his reserve service. The last reserve unit Neil served in was the Queens Own Yeomanry Squadron in York.
Neil who served in the capacity as CQMS with A Company, had the deserved reputation as a ‘can do’ person. If you wanted something doing or needed something getting, Neil
was your man. He was a great communicator and worked well with the most junior cadet, through to the most senior officer.
Neil was well respected by everyone who served with him, both in the ACF and Reserve
Army. This was clearly seen at his funeral where it was standing
room only, with Adult Volunteers and Reserve
Soldiers from all over
the County attending the funeral, alongside the family
and friends of Neil. Neil will be sadly
missed by all concerned and the County sends its love and support to Major Michelle and her two sons.
A DOUBLE ACHIEVEMENT FOR B COMPANY CADET
By Major Mick Bell
It was a great end of year for one high achieving B
Company Cadet. CSM (as was) Olivia Kennedy gained
the Top Student Award on her Master Cadet Course run at Frimley Park in September 2023, making her one of the top achieving cadets in the whole of the ACF UK. An outstanding achievement for Olivia.
This was followed by her second achievement, that of being appointed to the prestigious rank of County Cadet Regimental Sergeant Major. The Commandant, Colonel Hugh Gell, promoted Olivia to the rank of RSM on the B Company October 2023 parade. Yet another fantastic achievement by RSM Olivia. The County wish her all the best in her tenure as our Cadet Regimental Sergeant Major.
