Success for Lucas at the Forces Equine National Championship
Cadet Lucas Smyth joined 2387 (Pudsey) Squadron in September 2023 at the age of 12. He was interested in flying, and inspired by
the fact that his grandfather was in the RAF. He passed out on the 16th of December with blue badges; Leadership, DofE, Radio and First Aid along with qualifying with his First Class classification.
The family is involved in equine activities, so he was already an experienced rider, and was aware of the National Championship, and that there was a class he could compete in.
Competition involved an early start – they had to be walking the horses round the arena to get them used to it by 07:15, and then once happy with that they had time to spend preparing
the horse and associated kit to look their very best. There was a 40 min warm up in a separate arena, then weeks of preparation culminated in a presentation lasting less than 7 minutes; after which it was just a case of waiting for the results – and a splendid third place. He thoroughly enjoyed the day, as did Yealand Mamzelle his horse, and was delighted to be on the podium.
