in the countryside, more physical tests, and a range of group exercises, to check up on our inter-personal skills – after all, we needed to know if we were going to get on together thousands of miles away from home, and in challenging circumstances.

Colonel Fuller had recruited a large adult team to support the training, including Lieutenant Commander Roy Tanner from the Sea Cadets, who acted as Deputy Course Director (Roy sadly died in December 2020, and is remembered by many for his contribution to the training events for this and the two previous Himalaya expeditions), and so the process continued, right up to the time of departure

in July 2012, with the training based in a variety of locations – the Dales, the North York Moors, the East Yorkshire Wolds, Nidderdale, and the Peak District - with the final list of participants being 19 cadets and five adults, plus our Himalayan guide and mentor, Roy Francis.
The BIG surprise for me was when, a few weeks before departure, the nominated Expedition Leader was obliged to withdraw from the event for business/ personal reasons. I received a call from Colonel Fuller asking me to take on the role - all I can say is that 24 flew out, and 24 flew back!
