North West Counties Regional Report
went ahead – virtually. My own society has worked well with plenty of entries in the few classes we had (as shown in ALG 4-2020). It’s not as good as a real show, but it is better than nothing at all.
By the time you read this, the first Virtual AGM of the North West Region will have taken place and I am sure it will have been a success.
We have plenty to look forward to in 2021, with some RHS shows such as Tatton and the probable opening of RHS Bridgewater in Salford, all very prestigious; but the local allotment shows by amateur gardeners, in my opinion, are far more worthwhile and beneficial to our society.

This year has been interesting. There have been many changes – some for the better, and some for the worse. The year began with the usual rain and wind, and in some areas too much rain followed by floods.
There were early visits in January
and February to local parish councils, and the re-establishment of some transferred allotments from town councils to parish councils, and guidance was given on the best way to organise and run them in a partnership between plotholders, the parish and the NAS.
In March the weather improved. It was warm, with sun and blue skies, and then came the lockdown. We were

invited to take part in some broadcasts on both ITV and BBC to promote the best way to cope with lockdown: Get an allotment!
I am sure that people with an outdoor space coped better through the first lockdown than many other people,
and the message from many local authorities was that their waiting
lists were full to bursting, and some authorities closed their lists. I can understand this, but I do not agree with it. If there are not enough allotments – make some more!
