Unit Welfare Department Update 1st MWD Regt
by Sgt Jenna Miles (UWSNCO)
With the final lifting of
the last restrictions of
the ‘Pandemic’ and the
Regiment finally returning to
some sort of normality, the Unit
Welfare Department has been kept
rather busy. The Welfare Team set
themselves some goals to achieve in restoring some morale, unit cohesion and family engagement after what seemed like an eternity of restrictions which had sadly become the ‘new norm’.
Opening the Community Centre seemed an easy enough win to hopefully bring back the military families to our weekly Visons Children’s Centre drop- in session. As an outreach location, this had proved quite popular before the pandemic and so we were eager for them to return. It was frustratingly slow to begin with, but the session has grown in numbers over the weeks with some regular attendees each week. The centre has also been hired for a few children’s birthday party’s another great way to encourage families back on to St Georges Barracks.
The Youth Club has been reopened by our Army Welfare Service Community Development Worker, Bex Boston. She has provided a busy summer schedule ‘Out of School Adventures’ for our military children to attend along with sporting activities for free or at a fraction of the cost! The senior children’s residential Hilltop and Junior Camp held at St Georges Barracks proved popular and another great opportunity for serving families and their children.
We set to work to open the Dragons Den Bar not only for requested Sqn and Regt functions which have been regular but to open for key events to boost morale and cohesion amongst the Troops. All coverage of the Six Nations Rugby Championship was shown live, and the bar proved to be very popular with many enjoying the coverage with a nice cold beer!
The Welfare Team also organised a large event for the serving personnel and families to celebrate the Queens Platinum Jubilee and another event during the annual Commanders Challenge Tug of War event.
The team hope that they have delivered and will continue to deliver great service to 1st MWD Regiment Serving Personnel and their families.
