Allotment & Leisure Gardener Issue 2.1996
“A woman running an
allotment! Outrageous!”
Maggi Brown from the Henry Doubleday Research Association submitted an article on Organic Gardening. Her focus was
on Pauline Pears, a lady who, along with assistance from her husband, had taken on a plot ve years previously with the intention of growing organically.
It was not unusual to nd organically managed allotments in the early nineties apparently but it seems that a woman running an allotment was still considered decidedly odd.
The article read, ‘There was plenty of teasing from existing allotment holders as well as indifference, unwanted advice and disapproval!’
Needless to say, Pauline and her husband worked very hard and her plot was a superb example of how successful organic gardening can be.
