The Veterans’ Railcard will be valid from Thursday 5 November, giving an estimated 830,000 people access to discounted rail journeys.
The card will be available to anyone who has served at least one day in the armed forces, or merchant mariners who have seen duty on legally defined military operations.
It will offer the cardholder and a companion a third off most rail fares, plus 60% off for up to four children aged five to 15 travelling with the holder.
Initially the one-year version of the card will cost £21, with the three- year card costing £61. This price
is fixed until 31 March 2021 as an “introductory offer” – so if you buy one after this date, you may have
to pay more. Customers will be able to choose from a physical card or
a digital version they can keep on their phone.
Captain Sir Tom Moore –
who raised over £30 million for NHS charities by walking laps of his garden in April – became the first veteran to receive one of the railcards.
HOW DOES THE VETERANS’ RAILCARD WORK?
Here are the need-to-knows:
• It works on most tickets. You
can get discounts off anytime, off-peak, super off-peak and advance single and return tickets.
• There’s a £12 minimum fare on weekday mornings. This applies between 4.30am and 10am from Monday to Friday, except bank holidays.
• You can get a discount on London travel. The railcard gives you the discount on off- peak fares, off-peak daily caps on Oyster cards and off-peak travelcards.

A QUICK CHECK TO MAKE SURE YOU’RE ELIGIBLE...
Are you a Veteran? You’ll be eligible for a Veterans Railcard providing you have served for
at least one day or more in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces (Regular or Reserve) or Merchant Mariners and have seen duty on legally defined military operations.
Proof of eligibility. You will need to provide one of the below as evidence of your eligibility with your application:
If you: Have an identification card or certificate. You will need
to provide: A copy of either your military identification card (MOD Form 90), Veterans Recognition (ID) Card, Veterans UK Status card , Certificate of Service or Certificate of Discharge
If you: Have a notification or letter regarding a claim for injury under the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme. You will need to provide:
A copy of either your Armed Forces Compensation Scheme notification of Guaranteed Income Payment (ongoing compensation payments), Armed Forces Compensation Scheme notification of lump sum payment (one-off compensation payment), award letter for Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP) or a disallowance letter
for Armed Forces Compensation Scheme benefits.
If you: Receive ongoing award under Armed Forces Compensation Scheme. You will need to provide: A copy of your annual payment advice slip.

If you: Receive Armed Forces Pension. You will need to provide: A copy of either your annual payment advice slip or Gross Annual Income Statement for an Armed Forces Pension (G281ST).
If you: Have served as a Merchant Mariner and seen duty on legally defined military operations. You will need to provide: A copy of the personal details page from your Discharge Book, along with the vessel name on which you served and the operation name and date.
Unfortunately we cannot accept the Defence Discount Service as proof of eligilibilty.

*Please note: MOD Form 90 cards cannot be reissued.
Name change. If the name on your eligibility documents is different from the name you now use, you will need to upload proof of this name change as part of the online application. Acceptable documents are Marriage Certificate, Divorce Certificate or Deed Poll documents.
