 James early
career started out
in the coal mines with
the pit ponies and he
would tell stories of the
ponies being down the mine
for such a long period that
when they emerge above ground again, they had to spend at least 3 days to readjust. This experience took Dad into a different path by joining Billy Smart Circus, but again working with horses which he taught to do stunts to entertain the crowd in the big ring.
It was the taste of National Service that made our dad decide
to join the full time Army. Being
of ‘Old School’ Jim was a loyal and trusted man with great pride, and he finished of by reaching the grand rank of Warrant Officer.
James was cremated at Grantham Crematorium on 25th September 2020. We all miss James (Jim) Rogers today. (RIP)
LCpl Callum Smith
LCpl Callum Smith had a life-long love of horses and was able to realise his dream of working with them when he enlisted in the Household
Cavalry Mounted Regiment on the 9th February 2015. He completed his basic training at Pirbright and then
the Royal Armoured Corps initial trade training on the 28th May 2015. At this point LCpl Smith’s hard work began to pay dividends as he was now able to focus on his work with military working horses, completing the Mounted Dutyman Course and then undertaking State Ceremonial Duties.
In 2017 LCpl Smith transferred
to the Royal Army Veterinary Corps and embarked on a new career as
a Veterinary Technician, initially completing his Protection and Vehicle Search Dog Handler Courses before focussing on his Veterinary Technician training. Promoted to LCpl in 2019, he displayed huge promise in his clinical work, exhibiting an affinity with the animals he worked with. A keen sportsman and avid rugby player,
he also embraced many of the opportunities a career in the Army offered, gaining a place on the Army Rugby League Team.
His passion for animals was clear and his life-long love of horses shone through. An empathetic
and natural Veterinary Technician, he was making huge progress in his Registered Veterinary Nurse training and was on course to graduate in December this year. He was well regarded by both those he worked with at DATR and those he met and worked with on his Registered Veterinary Nurse training placements.
A dedicated family man, he was married to Emily and doted on
his son Theo and daughter Miley, thoroughly enjoying the quality time he spent with them. His parents, Al and Lisa, sister Lauren and brother Brad were all hugely supportive of his military career and his work with military working animals.
