Editorial
Looking back at 2014, two things stand out; rst that it seems like a long time ago as the pace hasn’t really let up (and not just because it has taken me so
long to compile this year’s Journal...), and secondly
how the year lacked a single focus. When I was last at Regimental Duty the year was very clearly focussed for
the entire Regiment either on HFT or MST and the subsequent tour. Last year was very different, and the experiences of a soldier in A Sqn over the last year will
be very different to one in B Sqn. Some will have been
lucky enough to deploy to Kenya and on tour to Bosnia;
others to Gibraltar and Morocco or Ukraine. However
none will have deployed on all, and I suspect that the
rst that some will know of what went on during this deploy- ments will be from reading about them in this Journal.
All of the many deployments covered in the Journal have increased the Regiment’s experience on JACKAL and Light Cavalry is steadily maturing as a concept. We have been very lucky that we have had such a wide range of opportunities to test ourselves. There is still much to do here, but slowly and surely the niggles are being worked out, and we are leading the way for our Lt Cav cousins in the QDG and SCOTS DG.
Hopefully you will also notice throughout the Journal evidence of the ever closer bond with the QOY. The Regimental pairing mechanism is already paying divi- dends and offering opportunity for both regular and reserve soldiers alike.. For those in the association who have left in recent years, the QOY’s recruiting advert in these pages may tempt you into pulling your exercise kit down from the attic! We look forward to developing these bonds still further next year once we are rmly established in Catterick.
Finally, a few words of thanks; Mel and Dicky at HHQ
for doing the majority of the legwork and talking a nov- ice editor through the process; Jayne at Crest for her patience; Keith and Carol for their unenviable task of correcting Light Dragoon spelling and grammar and nally to Jamie Gray for his work as the assistant editor. Not every lieutenant has to deal with the body blow of having a serious injury, being told to stand in as the Sqn 2IC and compiling the Journal. He even did so with (mildly) good grace.
