1 MWD Regt (RAVC) Football On The Move
The new season has brought a refreshing optimism to both Male and Female football within 1 MWD Regt. A new structure, dedicated committee and abundance of talent has placed both the Male and Female football team in a good position to thrive, develop and challenge over the season to come. The progress and ability were showcased at the recent Army Medical Services Football 6s where both teams stood out and proved they were up there amongst the best.
The female team who have not been training together long went to Prince Williams’ Barracks at Grantham to compete in the AMS Channing Cup and the Male team travelled the horrid journey north to Catterick Garrison defend their title in the AMS Tinsley Cup. The females were dominant in the group stage and won 5 of the 6 matches by impressive score lines to finish top of the group and set up a final with 4 Armoured Medical Regiment. They put everything on the line and played brilliantly but luck was not their side and lost the final 2 – 0. The whole team can hold their heads-up high as they finished runners up to a very good side the highest position recorded by the Female Regimental Team. The team was made up by the following players LCpls Baxter, Goument, Ceresa, Markovitch and Pte Clausen, Fritzpatrick, Hayes, Chatton, Moon, Harrison and Jones. LCpl Marriot the new
1 MWD Regt Female Football Coach brought the team together, lifting and driving them on when they needed it, a real inspiration to the team. 1 MWD Regt Female Football looks bright with a lot of players scouted for the AMS Team.
The male team set out to defend their title and right from the first game had no intentions of giving up the trophy without a fight. We stormed through the group stage playing 7 matches scoring 22 goals and conceding just 3 topping the table unbeaten. We then went on to play the Semi Final against AMS Veterans comfortably winning 2 – 0. The final beckoned us again this year’s opposition were local boys 5 Armoured Medical Regiment who were determined to not let 1 MWD Regt take home the Trophy, they did not have a choice we controlled the game from start to finish and ran out 1-0 winners and Champions again. I had the privilege this year to captain a talented bunch of individuals in LCpl’s Heys, Wood, Appleby, Pte Morris and Cfn Devlin and Redshaw who made it possible for me to lift the Cup yet again, I did pop up with a few goals along the way to help out including the winner in the final. Like the female’s Male football has a lot of talented lads that will be resenting the AMS this year and looks good for future.
