REVIVAL
Major recovery began in the late
1990s. New enthusiastic committee members identified the need for a major clean-up, which was carried
out by willing volunteers. A publicity campaign brought in new tenants.
By 1998 the two sites even had a web presence: apparently, we were among the first sites in the country to embrace technology in this way. The 21st century has seen a real upsurge in interest. Both sites are fully tenanted and
there are many new initiatives, such
as composting toilets, refreshment
facilities, ‘Burn Bins’ to reduce age-old complaints about bonfires, social activities, community projects and regular volunteering days to keep the sites tidy. Some tenants have had amazingly long records of continuity. Trevor Taylor took on his plot at Vinery Road in about 1970 and did not cease active work on it

until 2012. Contrary to popular notions, women members were certainly not unknown in earlier times, although it appears to have been 1990 before any women members attended the AGM. The first women to join the committee are recorded by the late 1990s and now, in 2020, women account for over 50% of the membership. Tenants include many with young families who encourage their children to join them on the plot and appreciate the benefits of growing your own.
