altogether and stranded the tail-enders in Race 2. Simon Gibbens showed the fleet round in the first race, before Tim Law got it together to win Race 2. At the end of day 2 it was Graham Cranford-Smith who emerged as overall winner for the second year running. Tim Law could only manage 2nd despite taking two race wins and Roger Guess was classified 3rd.
The season continues, but this report draws to a close with just two important pieces of advice, the first of which is prompted by an extraordinary visitor who dropped in to Salcombe at the end of the summer. On a very windy, cold, Sunday afternoon on 22nd September, Tim Law
& Ester McLarty went out in their Lasers and braved the breakers on the bar to welcome round UK Laser sailor Neil Peters, aka ‘Stick Daring’, as he ended that day’s reach from St.Mawes. ‘Stick’ and his
ancient Laser had set out from Eastbourne in July to sail anti-clockwise around the UK in order to raise funds for prostate cancer research. To date he has raised over £20,000 for this worthy cause. So why am I telling you? Simples... those of you who know Ester will know that, as a urology surgeon, she has a great professional insight into this form of cancer and in her impromptu interview (see Facebook) with ‘Stick’ on the slipway at Batson was a revelation. 1 in 10 men will get it, which pretty well means that 1 in 10 of the Solo fleet will get it, i.e. at least 6 of us. Testing is simple and the treatment successful, if caught early. Two of our numbers have been tested since the ‘Stick’ landed at Batson, that means that there are likely to be at least another four of you who need to see their GP now – don’t delay.
The second important piece of advice
concerns the rumblings going on at high level in the NSCA about changes to
the Solo design rules. There are many proposals on the table which could, if approved unchallenged, make our boats out of date, less competitive and also less valuable. If you have concerns, you need to vote. If you want to vote, you have to be a member of the NSCA. If you say you cannot afford the £25 annual sub., you will not be believed. Your vote is going
to be important, so if you don’t want to suffer from 20:20 hindsight in 2021, make sure you join up in 2020. Finally, if you want to know the sort of unimaginable consequences which might arise when 28% of those who could have voted, didn’t bother, take another look at what happened on 23rd June 2016.....
